Self-Motivation Authority to Offer Practical Strategies May 20 ...

According to E. Scott Geller, Ph.D., Alumni Distinguished Professor and Director of the Center for Applied Behavior Systems at Virginia Tech, self-motivation is key to opening the door of self-leadership and self-improvement. Dr. Geller will discuss the essence of self-motivation and offer practical strategies for bringing the best out of oneself and others on Friday, May 20, 2011, at the Palm Harbor Community Activity Center, 1500 ? 16th St.

The open-to-the-public event will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a reception, where Dr. Geller will sell and sign copies of his new book, When No One?s Watching: Living and Leading Self-Motivation. His presentation, ?The Psychology of Self-Motivation: Bringing Out the Best in Yourself and Others,? will begin at 7 p.m.

The cost is $15 per person, which includes the program, hors d?oeuvres, beer and wine. A raffle will be held for a Virginia Tech quilt. Dr. Geller has authored 31 books, 43 book chapters, 38 training manuals, 203 magazine articles and more than 350 research articles addressing the development and evaluation of behavior-change interventions to improve quality of life. His extramural grant funding, totaling more than $6 million, has involved the application of behavioral science to benefit corporations, institutions, government agencies or communities in general.

He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Association for Psychological Science, the International Association of Behavior Analysis and the World Academy of Productivity and Quality Sciences. He is the past Editor of the Journal of Applied Behavioral Analysis (1989-1992), current Associate Editor of Environment and Behavior (since 1982) and current Consulting Editor for Behavior and Social Issues, the Behavior Analyst Digest, the Journal of Organizational Behavior Management and the Journal of Safety Research.

In 1982, Dr. Geller received a teaching award from the American Psychological Association and, since then, has won every university teaching award bestowed by Virginia Tech. In 2001, Virginia Tech awarded him the University Alumni Award for Excellence in Research. In 2002, the university honored him with the Alumni Outreach Award for exemplary real-world applications of behavioral science and, in 2003, he was awarded the University Alumni Award for Graduate Student Advising.

In 2005, Dr. Geller received the Virginia Outstanding Faculty Award from the State Council of Higher Education. In 2007, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Organizational Behavior Management Network. The American Psychological Association honored Dr. Geller in 2009 with its APF Gold Medal for Lifetime Achievement in Psychology in the Public Interest.

The Virginia Tech Alumni Association?s Tampa Bay Chapter serves the greater Tampa Bay area, which is home to nearly 1,000 Virginia Tech alumni.
