91% Holy Motors

"Holy Motors," from French filmmaker Leos Carax, is the best avant-garde film of 2012 so far. But that's not saying much, as it's been a terrible year for avant-garde film. Despite its title, "Holy Motors" really isn't about cars. It's somewhat about technology, with limousines probably meant to represent traditional celluloid cameras -- so big and bulky that they are a challenge to handle. But oh so wonderful. Big wonderful machines. Stretch limos can barely turn a corner in the old sectors of great cities like Paris and New York. But doesn't everyone's heart skip a beat just a bit when they enter one? First and foremost, "Holy Motors" is about people, as was the case with Carax's first film, "Boy Meets Girl" (1984). This is an avant-garde artist with a deep-feeling heart and a deep sensitivity to the people around him. Holy Love. Amen to that. The film documents a day in the life of a man named Oscar. (Perhaps this is a tribute to American cinema and its big, grand Academy Awards. Holy Glamour.) Played spectacularly well by the protean Denis Lavant, Oscar is carted around all day in a white stretch limo, taken to a series of appointments throughout Paris. At each appointment, he becomes a different character. His limo is a dressing room, where he applies make-up and elaborate disguises to become his next character. The first one is an old, crippled woman begging for money on the street. Another is a revolting barefoot troll (half-man, half-beast) who interrupts a high-fashion photo shoot and kidnaps the model (who is played by Eva Mendes). Every sequence is quite thrilling, and each one is so different from the others. Most breathtaking of all is the sequence where his movements are recorded in a stop-motion studio, for use in what appears to be a pornographic video game. Gradually it becomes clear that these appointments are elaborately planned, and everyone he interacts with during each scene is also an actor. While donning his next costume in the limo, he is also reading a file that someone else has prepared, a summary of what his next character will be doing. We even meet a man who appears to be something like Oscar's employer, who critiques Oscar's performances. Oscar announces that he has been having more difficulty staying in character because the cameras have gotten so small that they cannot be seen. This is when "Holy Motors" started to seem like a comment on digital filmmaking. At my screening at the New York Film Festival, Carax was in attendance, as was Kylie Minogue, who has a small role in the film. (I initially thought this was Minogue's first time acting. But not so. She has appeared in a number of television shows and films, including "Moulin Rouge," where she played the Green Fairy. Who knew?) Carax spoke for about a half-hour after the screening, and it became even more clear that "Holy Motors" was primarily meant as an allegory about 21st-century filmmaking and the demise of traditional cameras. At one point, he said the new cameras today are not really cameras. "They're more like computers," he said. He feels sad about the rise of digital filmmaking, claiming that it "looks terrible." But "Holy Motors," which was shot 100% on digital, looked gorgeous. Gradually during his remarks, the object of his ire shifted. What really angers him is that he's been unable to make a film since 1999. He had several projects collapse at the last minute because producers won't back him. This has nothing to do with the 21st century or changing technology. This is the age-old problem of cinema being enormously expensive. If anything, it's gotten easier in the digital age because the new technology costs so much less. It's no surprise to me that Carax finally was able to get a project green-lighted now that digital has triumphed. To me, Carax has digital to thank. Furthermore, I suspect that "Holy Motors" is going to succeed well enough financially that he's going to get another project green-lighted in 2013. Holy Digital. While I appreciate Carax's work and consider myself a fan, I wouldn't put him in my pantheon. There's something still just a bit underwhelming about his work.

A Personal Loan To Settle Other Outstanding Debts ... - About Finance

Posted by Alex Cha on Rating 9.0 ?Outstanding

Taking a new loan if you have other loans yet to repay may not be the smartest move to make. You just can?t pay debt with another debt. But there?s an exception to that law. If you have a lot of unpaid debts and their interests taking most of your instalment bill, then it?s prudent to consolidate your loans. This is especially helpful to people who have loans from different lending firms simultaneously and those who just pay the minimum monthly fee.

A lot of us have numerous payments to resolve every month. We need to pay basic utilities, insurance, credit cards, and our loans. If you?re the type who just pays the minimum monthly bill of your credit cards, then you have a far way to go before you can settle the total bill because chances are, you?re only paying the interest rate and annual charge. you?ve hardly touched the surface of the principal amount of the big purchase you made years ago. It would possibly take you forever before you can clear out your credit card and other loan payments.

Acquiring a personal loan to merge all your loans can make your job easier. You can take out a loan to pay off numerous banks and lending firms. This will remove the individual interest rates of your debts, which, as we all know, are what make loans really hard to repay in full. apply for a personal loan to pay off your consolidated debts so you would just need to settle one loan in monthly terms. It?s indubitably easier and more convenient to pay just one loan.

The interest can likewise be lowered because there are credit companies offering debt consolidation that negotiate lower interest rates with other lenders. The great thing about acquiring personal loans for loan consolidation is the flexible payment terms. A lot of credit companies offer affordable payment plans that are customised to the debtor?s capability to pay. So rather than being laden with high monthly payment instalments, the debtor can negotiate with the creditor for a more affordable payment term.

Personal loans are generally unsecured, which means the loan applicant doesn?t have to present a significant asset to the lending firm as a security guarantee for the loan. That is why personal loans are a popular option. People who don?t have a significant property have a chance of being granted for the loan.

Romney pulls his punches on Libya in final debate

BOCA RATON, Florida (Reuters) - Mitt Romney passed up on his last best chance to put President Barack Obama on the defensive over his handling of a deadly September 11 attack on the U.S. mission in Libya when the Republican challenger held fire on the issue in their final debate on Monday.

Obama came to the showdown in Boca Raton, clearly prepared for Round Two over the events surrounding last month's killings of the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans at the consulate in Benghazi, a big vulnerability for the president on foreign policy just two weeks before the November 6 election.

But Romney, whose misstep on Libya in their previous debate may have left him feeling singed, shied away from a fight - a decision that could disappoint many conservatives who hoped to see their candidate on the attack.

Obama was the only one of the two candidates even to utter the word "Benghazi" during the 90-minute debate focused on foreign policy, and the president even said later at one point, "Going back to Libya..." when another question was asked.

Asked why Romney had pulled his punches on the issue, Romney senior adviser Eric Fehrnstrom said, "He'd addressed it plenty of times in other forums and there were many other areas to cover."

But U.S. Democratic Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz, acting as one of Obama's surrogates at the debate site at Lynn University, said Romney had little choice but to soft-pedal his criticism of Obama on the issue.

"It's no surprise," she told Reuters. "He's been spanked repeatedly for politicizing a tragedy."

But Republicans are sure to ask whether Romney missed another opportunity.

LAST LIBYA EXCHANGE WAS TESTY

In the most vividly testy exchange of last week's debate, Romney said Obama took weeks to acknowledge that the Benghazi assault was a terrorist attack.

Obama, who spoke of "acts of terror" in an appearance in the White House Rose Garden the day after the attack, challenged Romney to "check the transcript" and chastised him for trying to score political points on the deaths of Americans overseas.

The moderator of that debate, CNN's Candy Crowley, backed Obama's interpretation of events, saying, "He did call it an act of terror."

In fact, some of Obama's top aides initially attributed the Benghazi violence to protests over an anti-Islam film and said it was not premeditated, before acknowledging much later that it was a terrorist attack.

But a slew of pundits dubbed it Romney's "Libya moment," and some of his own aides conceded privately that Obama got the better of him.

Moderator Bob Schieffer gave Romney a wide-open chance for another swing at the issue on Monday when he noted that questions remained that the administration had yet to answer about the incident.

"What happened? What caused it? Was it spontaneous? Was it an intelligence failure? Was it a policy failure? Was there an attempt to mislead people about what really happened?" Schieffer asked.

Romney chose to tread softly.

"We see in Libya an attack apparently by, I think we know now, by terrorists of some kind against - against our people there, four people dead," he said. "Our hearts and minds go out to them."

He moved from that to criticism of Obama's overall policy toward the Arab Spring revolts, but never really drew a strict connection.

Obama managed to dodge the more pointed parts of Schieffer's question, including shifting explanations of what happened and whether the administration had failed to provide requested security for the consulate.

"When we received that phone call, I immediately made sure that, number one, that we did everything we could to secure those Americans who were still in harm's way; number two, that we would investigate exactly what happened, and number three, most importantly, that we would go after those who killed Americans and we would bring them to justice," Obama said.

"And that's exactly what we're going to do."

Despite that, Fehrnstrom said, "There are many more questions than there are answers on this from the administration."

Is AJ Lee the worst GM of all time?

AJ Lee

To answer the headline to this story, no. The worst General Manager in history is Mike Adamle by a long shot. In the aftermath of AJ Lee?s shocking resignation on Monday Night Raw, however, it?s worth wondering where the now-former authority figure would rank among the most ineffective and eccentric leaders in the history of Monday night?s hottest show, including the likes of Eric Bischoff, ?Mr. Excitement? John Laurinaitis and that notorious aforementioned mangler of monikers.

The reign of a Raw General Manager averages to about 205 days, and although that time period isn?t lengthy by any means, AJ Lee bowed out at 92 days ? less than half the average. Granted, AJ?s all-too-brief tenure as GM has been fraught with peril since taking on these new responsibilities in July, but how many of those problems were the result of AJ?s own unhinged decision-making process? From attacking Vickie Guerrero to forcing Kane and her fianc? Daniel Bryan to undergo anger management therapy to slapping Paul Heyman across the face, AJ has made business very personal on Raw, and the WWE Board of Directors has been keeping a very close eye on her for good reason.

It was AJ?s notorious inability to separate her business and personal lives that would ultimately spell the end of her reign as Raw GM. On Monday night, the feisty Diva ? whom the WWE Board placed on probation in early October ? announced that her self-ousting is due to allegations of fraternizing with a Superstar on the roster. (WATCH | PHOTOS)

That Superstar was later revealed to be John Cena, who recently had a ?business dinner? with the Raw GM. Both AJ and the Cenation leader denied that anything salacious transpired during or after that meal, but Mr. McMahon affirmed that there was ?incriminating evidence? that left the WWE Board with no choice but to ask AJ for her resignation. This conspicuous turn of events put Guerrero in place to serve as Raw?s Managing Supervisor, a role that will no doubt work in her favor when a new General Manager is ultimately appointed.

Coincidences are rare in WWE, especially when The Queen Diva is involved, but what if there was more to that dinner than AJ and Cena are letting on? If AJ?s fraternization with Cena went beyond a mere business dinner ? while she was on probation, no less ? then the title of ?Worst GM Ever? just might have a new No. 1 contender. (POLL: WAS AJ LEE SET UP?)

Although it remains unclear exactly what transpired during that evening repast with the 12-time World Champion, the unorthodox Diva noted on Raw that she?s aware that she?s been on thin ice for quite some time. With AJ?s admission of her shortcomings, it?s difficult to blame her too harshly for not living up to the loftiest of expectations. She might not have made a major impact as Raw GM, but at least she never subjected the WWE Universe to so-called ?People Power,? interrupted Raw broadcasts with incessant emails or waxed poetic about the likes of ?MC Punk? or ?Randy Norton.? Sorry, Mr. Adamle.

So what?s next for AJ? The unpredictable Diva explained on Raw that she?s gone ?from being homeless to being the boss,? due in no small part to her lifelong tenacity. Now that AJ is no longer running Raw, her schedule has certainly opened up, and judging by her hair-pulling brawl with Raw?s new Managing Supervisor, her buttoned-up lifestyle has hardly hindered her fighting spirit. Perhaps the most exciting chapter of the AJ Lee saga is about to begin.

Exercise the body to keep the brain healthy, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? People who exercise later in life may better protect their brain from age-related changes than those who do not, a study suggests.

Researchers found that people over 70 who took regular exercise showed less brain shrinkage over a three-year period than those who did little exercise.

Psychologists and Neuroimaging experts, based at the University of Edinburgh, did not find there to be any benefit to brain health for older people from participation in social or mentally stimulating activities.

Greater brain shrinkage is linked to problems with memory and thinking and the researchers say their findings suggest that exercise is potentially one important pathway to maintaining a healthy brain both in terms of size and reducing damage.

The researchers also examined the brain's white matter - the wiring that transmits messages round the brain. They found that people over 70 who were more physically active had fewer 'damaged' areas - visible as abnormal areas on scanning - in the white matter than those who did little exercise.

Additionally, the researchers from the University of Edinburgh found that the over-70s taking regular exercise had more grey matter - the parts of the brain with nerve cell bodies.

The Edinburgh team used MRI scans to measure the volume of brain tissue and the volume and health of the brain's white matter in almost 700 people.

They studied levels of physical activity which ranged from moving only for necessary housework to more strenuous forms of exercise such as keep-fit or taking part in competitive sports.

Scientists also recorded whether or not the participants - all aged over 70 - took part in mentally stimulating activities such reading and participating in social groups.

Dr Alan Gow of the University of Edinburgh's Centre for Cognitive Ageing and Cognitive Epidemiology who led the research, said: "Our results suggest that to maintain brain health, physical activity may be more beneficial than choosing more sedentary activities. We are excited by the next stages of this research as we seek to understand more about what might underlie the effect, but in the meantime, increasing physical activity - even a short walk each day - can only be encouraged."

Professor James Goodwin, Head of Research at Age UK who fund the Disconnected Mind research project, said: "This research is exciting as it provides vital clues as to what impacts the way our brain ages and how we could tackle mental decline. If we can establish definitively that exercise provides protection against mental decline, it could open the door to exercise programmes tailored to the needs of people as they age.

"We already know that exercise is important in reducing our risk of some illnesses that come with ageing, such as cardiovascular disease and cancer. This research reemphasises that it really is never too late to benefit from exercise, so whether it's a brisk walk to the shops, gardening or competing in a fun run it is crucial that, those of us who can, get active as we grow older."

Acting Is an Art, Actors Are a Business - Film Directing Tips

by Glenn Kali?son.

Act?ing is an art, and most accom?plished actors speak of their ?craft? as one of cre?ative expres?sion. That is no less true today than 20, 50, 100 and 1000?years ago. But the most suc?cess?ful actors and other types of per?form?ers also think of them?selves as a?busi?ness. This is because an actor ulti?mately must have a?valu?able and high-quality prod?uct, must deliver to a?client?s expec?ta?tion, and must man?age cash inflow such that there is a?profit when the show is?over.

To a?per?former who is just start?ing out, this might seem like a?dis?tant need. But in fact any?one who plans to earn their liv?ing in movies, tele?vi?sion or on the stage should con?sider their busi?ness objec?tives while attend?ing a?school for act?ing. The fol?low?ing tips are among those we teach at the Act?ing & Film School at the New York Film Acad?emy. It includes advice that can carry you from the ear?li?est stages of your career through to retire?ment (if you ever in fact do plan to retire???many actors don?t):

Lyttelton misses out on more cruises | Stuff.co.nz

Lyttelton Port of Christchurch has confirmed it is unable to accept bookings for the majority of cruise vessels for the 2013/2014 cruise season.

In March 2012, LPC announced it would defer the development of new cruise berth facilities pending a comprehensive review of port development and enhancement plans after the Canterbury earthquakes of 2010 and 2011.

The review of development and enhancement plans included reassessing the original cruise berth plans, and the proposed designs, in light of the seismic activity.

Akaroa started hosting extra ships from late last year because of earthquake damage at Lyttelton port and is hosting another 80-plus cruise ships in the current season through to April next year

Akaroa will continue host the bulk of the cruise ships for the following 2013/14 season as well, though Lyttelton continues to host some of the smaller cruise ships.

Chief executive Peter Davie today said the port was now working through options for cruise berth development, design, construction and funding.

"Given the complex nature and the limited timeframe, it will be challenging to meet the opening of the 2013/2014 cruise season in October 2013," he said.

"When we do the cruise berth development we will need to take into account infrastructure such as roads and parking for coaches, to provide customers with an experience that is up to international standards."

The cruise industry remained a priority for tourism in Canterbury and Lyttelton port would continue to play a role, he said.

"The port will still cater to small cruise vessels that can berth in the port's inner harbour.

"With the new cruise facilities, we have to do it right first time around and we have to be fiscally responsible. It has been a difficult decision, but in the long run it will prove to be the right decision."

Macomb Center for the Performing Arts Embarks on 30th Season ...

This season marks 30 years of music, comedy, dance and theater at the Macomb Center for the Performing Arts in Clinton Township.

Since opening in 1982 at 44575 Garfield, the Macomb Center has welcomed many of the entertainment industry?s top stars.

?We?ve had from Bill Cosby to Stevie Wonder to Frankie Valli,? said Sandy Hazelton-Pianko, marketing manager at the center. ?Kathy Griffin was here two consecutive years and sold out both years.?

Other performers to take the stage include Ray Charles, Johnny Cash, Kenny Rogers, Willie Nelson, Tony Bennett, Regis Philbin, Wayne Newton, The Beach Boys, Paul Anka and Jeff Daniels.

The 30th professional season at the Macomb Center opened last month with Burton Cummings, lead singer of The Guess Who. Hazelton-Pianko said this season?s entertainment will give the public a wide variety of productions.

?Pretty much every weekend through April we have something going on,? she said. ?It?s such a wide range; we really have something for everyone.?

The Capitol Steps made an appearance at the center Oct. 13, entertaining the crowd with skits, impressions and political satire based on their days as senate staffers.

Page to Stage, a theater and literacy program that brings books to life on stage, will perform throughout the season.

?The Osmond Brothers are coming,? Hazelton-Pianko added. ?They?ve been here several times in the past and they?re doing exceptional.?

Because of the variety in productions, she said the center is able to draw large crowds for most of their shows.

?We are so lucky to be supported by Macomb County residents,? she said. ?They know what a gem they have, so when they?re looking for entertainment close to home that is affordable, this is the perfect place to come. People who come to one show often want to come back time and time again.?

And, there?s not a bad seat in the house.

?Every single seat you get a great view of the stage,? Hazelton-Pianko said.

The center also includes a smaller venue for events such as graduations or dance recitals. In addition, the public can rent the venue for events.

Community partners that perform shows at the Macomb Center include All The World?s A Stage, The Macomb Ballet Company, the Warren Symphony Orchestra, the Macomb Symphony Orchestra and the Detroit Concert Choir.

leanhowtomakemoney: Internet and Businesses Online: PPC ...

Increase Your PPC Campaign Productivity With Google Ad Extensions

A valuable addition to your AdWords PPC campaign is Call Extensions, which allows mobile users to call your business directly from your ad. Call Extensions can be added to your campaign using Ad Extensions, and configured to help localise your advertisements, helping customers to get connected with you as easily as possible. Mobile advertising is becoming a huge part of online marketing, and if your website gets a lot of mobile traffic, you should be thinking of tailoring your PPC campaigns towards these mobile users.

What Is Google Pay Per Click And Why Is It Good For Your Business?

Google offers many services that can benefit your business and it is up to you whether you take advantage of it or not. Google is the second biggest website in the world only behind Facebook so it is definitely something that you should take advantage of. They offer a Pay Per Click (PPC) service which can help you grow as a business.

Why PPC Services Are Popular?

One of the highly demanded services which have changed the fortunes of online market is Pay Per Click or PPC. This online marketing strategy has not only helped the main product, but the affiliated ones have benefited too. It has given a money-earning source in the hands of net users, who earn when visitors click on the advert. The business was never so wide and spread out as it is now.

Targeting PPC Ads by Location

Your PPC advertising can be greatly improved by adding geographical targeting to your campaign. By targeting your ads to a specific location, your results will become more relevant and your click-through rate should increase. Using ads that are not targeted by location means that you are potentially wasting money and impressions by showing adverts to customers nowhere near your store. Local, national and international companies can all benefit from geographical targeting, as it hones in on the users who are most likely to visit and use your store or website. Even e-commerce companies that don't rely on a geographical base for their business can use localised targeting to improve their results. Website and search analytics can provide information on where your customers are located, or the geographical search terms they are using to find your website (even if they are not technically relevant to your location), and these keywords and phrases can then be utilised to target your ads to accommodate these specific types of users.

Why Advertise on Google?

Advertisers often ask why advertise on Google? Well the answer is simple; Google is by far the largest search engine on the internet having control of over 40 percent of searches and associate pay per click (PPC). PPC means that the advertiser pays a certain sum for every click on his advertisement. If he has a higher budget, then the position of his advertisement will improve and more traffic will result.

How to Use AdWords to Identify Keyword Value To You

A lot of webmasters and newbies to SEO forget one of the cardinal rules which is keyword research. Without performing keyword research, you have no idea of important statistics as they relate to keywords such as search volume, competition levels, and so on. Basically targeting keywords blindly is a huge waste of time and possibly the largest mistake you can make in online marketing when trying to gain organic or many other kinds of traffic.

Understanding PPC: A Primer on Using Google AdWords

Google AdWords is one of the most beneficial, yet most misunderstood ways of marketing your business online. The following article is a back-to-basics primer on how AdWords can help and how you can help yourself with AdWords.

Guide to Effective AdWords Management

Google AdWords is the biggest Internet advertising service in the world and mastering AdWords management is important if you want to succeed with your online marketing efforts. But its popularity and sophistication do not guarantee success. Try to implement some of the following tips in order to learn effective AdWords management.

LinkedIn PPC Campaign Management - Everything You Need To Know

LinkedIn ads though a bit on the expensive front, give you richer targeting options as compared to any other platform in the universe of digital marketing. Before getting into campaign management, let's see the structure of a LinkedIn ad campaign.

Advertising With Online Display Ads

Most vendors have determined that online advertising reaches a much broader customer potential than telemarketing, cold calling, or other assorted sales methodology that only reaches local customers. Advertising with online display ads has greater potential to reaching the customers who are specifically seeking the product or service being offered, but there are different types of advertising that relates to the media being used.

Google AdWords Management Pros and Cons

Google AdWords PPC advertising program, despite its worldwide success, has a number of pros and cons. These are discussed in this article allowing you to make up your own mind as to whether you believe it to be an effective marketing tool or not.

How Pay Per Click Can Be Used to Promote Your Website

Traffic is the lifeblood of a website. In order to jump start a new website or to drive a continuous flow of visitors to an existing website, pay per click is an important strategy to adopt. Here are some of the ways you can improve your click rate.

Top Tips For Maximizing Your AdSense Profits

Google Adsense is the best way to make money online through advertising. This multi-billion dollar empire has no problem paying webmasters to display their ads, so take advantage to this lucrative offer. Learn how to maximize your effort.

Comparing Popular Ad Formats

There are many types of ad formats that you can use on your website. Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages in terms of design, visitor experience, and effectiveness. Below are some forms of the most popular advertising formats and their respective pros and cons.

PPC Marketing In The Digital Age

Most people living in the digital age have developed a very clingy relationship with the World Wide Web. Eighty percent of adults in first world countries spend an average of two hours a day with computers and other similar devices that give them access to the internet.

Effective Pay Per Click Services for Ad Campaigns

As what many internet marketers have proven, using pay per click services is the ultimate solution for enhancing the conversion rates of your website and for improving your online sales. In PPC advertising, your advertisements are typically hosted on search engine results or partner websites. Instead of paying for each page load or impression, you only pay when a potential customer actually clicks your advertisement. Using Crazy Egg to Fine Tune Your PPC Campaigns

Imagine knowing exactly where, on your landing page, people are most likely to click? Knowing how far down the page visitors are scrolling? Knowing which type of traffic (referral, SEO, etc.) is ending up clicking on which buttons or links?

PPC Services: Important Considerations When Choosing a Provider

Pay-per-click campaigns are implemented to help you attract the right kind of business using online ads. They often supplement SEO campaigns, which essentially help your business website rank well in search engine listings. However, it is important to be familiar with the basic tenets that make for a successful PPC campaign, even if you choose to outsource to a professional company offering PPC services. This will help you ask the right questions when choosing between companies. At the end of the day, you really want to pay for PPC services that are the most ideal for your business.

How PPC Management Can Help You Earn More Money

There are a lot of available online marketing techniques for everyone, but none has come so close to being very effective like the usage of Pay Per Click search engines. PPC management systems or Pay Per Click management systems can maximize the effects of the website by placing them in search engines.

The Advantages Of Using Pay Per Click

Due to this, business owners have been looking at internet marketing or building up the positioning of their websites so that people will click on their sites to see what they have to offer.

Finding the Best Keywords for a PPC Campaign

If you have been an Internet marketer for very long at all, you are surely aware that doing keyword research is a vital part of driving traffic to your website. Romney raised $170 million in September, trails Obama

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney and his allies raised $170.5 million in September, the campaign said on Monday, falling just short of the 2012 fundraising record set last month by Democratic rival President Barack Obama.

Republicans began October with $191.2 million in cash on hand - money ready to be spent on advertising, get-out-the-vote efforts, staff, offices, rallies and other campaigning in the weeks before the November 6 election.

Obama and the Democratic National Committee already have reported raising $181 million in September, the best mark so far in the most expensive presidential election campaign in U.S. history. They did not disclose how much they had left in cash on hand.

September was the second consecutive month in which the Democrats out raised Romney's team after three months of the Republicans leading the way in fundraising.

It was also one of the toughest months for Romney: His position weakened in the polls first as a result of the new focus shifting to the Democratic Party Convention and then to a secretly filmed video that showed him calling 47 percent of Americans who receive government funds "victims."

Romney regained footing earlier this month when he delivered a strong performance against Obama in the first presidential debate on October 3. Campaign officials said the debate kicked up donations and helped the Republican candidate gain on the incumbent in the polls just weeks ahead of Election Day.

"Americans can't afford four more years like the last four," Spencer Zwick, Romney's finance chairman, said in a statement.

"With less than one month left, we will continue the hard work of raising the resources to ensure that Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan can win in November and bring real change to the American people."

Obama has since regained a slim lead in the tight race. The Reuters/Ipsos daily tracking poll on Monday showed him at 47 percent compared with Romney's 45 percent.

"This race is tied," Obama said in an email to supporters asking for last-minute donations on Monday. "What we do over the next 22 days will determine not just the next four years, but what this country looks like for decades to come."

DONORS AND FUNDRAISERS

Romney's financial operation has relied heavily on large checks written by wealthy supporters, in contrast to the Obama campaign, which has been aggressively courting such donors as well but relies mostly on smaller contributions.

The Romney campaign said it received more than 1 million donations in September in checks of less than $250, which were responsible for a total of $43.2 million.

Of all the cash received, 93 percent of all donations were of $250 or less, the campaign said. That means some $127 million was raised through less than 7 percent of the donations.

The Romney campaign continued to court large donors this week as some of the most influential of them gathered at a luxury hotel in Manhattan for a three-day "fall retreat" that started Monday.

The gathering was expected to include "special guests" including former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, real estate magnate and reality TV star Donald Trump, and Oklahoma oilman and Continental Resources CEO Harold Hamm.

Others expected to attend include Charles Schwab Corp CEO Charles Schwab and Jimmy John's sandwich franchise CEO Jimmy John Liautaud, according to an invitation posted by the Sunlight Foundation, a nonpartisan group that seeks more transparency in campaign finance.

The major fundraisers and donors were scheduled to attend election strategy meetings with top Romney campaign staff and mingle with vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan.

Romney had originally planned to join in, but changed plans on Monday to prepare for the second presidential debate against Obama on Tuesday night at New York's Hofstra University.

Obama's campaign, which holds the all-time fundraising record for its 2008 efforts, said it held its last fundraising event last week. In 2008, Obama's campaign and the DNC together brought in $193 million in September and came close to raising $1 billion overall.

Report claims Swiss bank UBS to cut 2,000 jobs

(MENAFN - Arab News) A Swiss newspaper is reporting that UBS, the country's largest bank, is set to cut some 2,000 jobs in its IT-department as part of a major cost-cutting drive.

A UBS AG spokesman on Sunday declined to comment on the report, but referred to an internal e-mail to employees by chief executive Sergio Ermotti saying the bank is still examining all its divisions and therefore "no final decisions have been made."

Swiss newspaper Tages-Anzeiger, citing internal documents, reported the bank plans to lay off almost a quarter of its 8,200 staffers in the IT department. It says that is likely to be followed by wider cuts, possibly affecting a fifth of the company's global workforce of some 12,700 employees.

Earlier this week Swiss private bank Julius Baer said it plans to cut about 1,000 jobs.

Biomarker Series: Electrolytes ? They Make You Tick | WellnessFX

credit: Instagram @alexandraalexis

Heart. Liver. Kidney. Blood pressure. All things any health-conscious person wants to keep in check. Electrolytes are a big part of all of this. Simply put, they are in every cell of the body, and are essential for various life processes. You?d be hard-pressed to find a function that didn?t involve a type of electrolyte somewhere along the line. For the sake of visualizing, here are some ways electrolytes regulate common bodily functions.

  • Electrolyte concentration differences between the inside and outside of cells create electrical pulses which allow your heart to beat
  • Electrolytes in the blood regulate osmotic pressure which controls the amount of fluids filtered and secreted by the kidneys
  • Maintaining a certain pH throughout the body (and being able to adjust for special needs?for example, acidic conditions to break down food in the stomach) is crucial to overall function. Electrolytes help keep this balance.
  • Your heart isn?t the only place where electrical pulses are needed. Every nerve in your body needs electrolytes to function properly. This involves thinking, moving, and even digestion!

These beg the questions: Are your sodium levels putting you at risk of high blood pressure? Is your pH too low due to haywire bicarbonate? Is your heart out of whack? Looking at many of the different electrolytes present in the body can give a holistic view of how well balance is being kept.

WellnessFX Medical Director Doctor Murdoc Khaleghi wraps up our Biomarker Series with electrolytes. Check out the video below to see why electrolytes are important and how testing can help you achieve your health and fitness goals.

Court orders Kafka scripts moved to Israel library

JERUSALEM (AP) ? After a long, tangled journey that Franz Kafka could have written about himself, an unseen treasure of writings by the surrealist author will be put on display and later online, an Israeli court ruled in documents released Sunday.

Ownership of the papers had been in dispute after the Israeli National Library claimed them, over the wishes of two sisters who had inherited the vast collection of rare documents from their mother and insisted on keeping them.

Friday's ruling by the Tel Aviv District Family Court ordered the collection to be transferred to the library in Jerusalem, which had argued that Max Brod, Kafka's close friend, had bequeathed the manuscripts to the library in his will.

The two sisters, Eva Hoffe and Ruth Wiesler, had inherited the documents from their mother, Brod's secretary, and had been storing them in a Tel Aviv apartment and bank vaults.

Kafka, a Jewish Prague native who wrote in German, is known for his dark tales of everyman protagonists crushed by mysterious authorities or twisted by unknown shames. His works have become classics, like "The Metamorphosis," in which a salesman wakes up transformed into a giant insect, and "The Trial," where a bank clerk is put through an excruciating trial without ever being told the charges against him.

The trove is said to include Brod's personal diary and some of Kafka's writings, including correspondence the two kept with other notable writers, which could shed new light on one of literature's most influential figures.

The German Literary Archive was not part of the legal proceedings but had backed the sisters' claims, hoping to purchase the manuscripts and arguing that they belong in Germany.

Ulrich Raulff, who heads the archive, said the papers have drawn great interest because they will likely reveal much about the years in Kafka's life that the public knows very little about.

"I hope that the Israeli National Library will provide open access to the material for the public as soon as possible," he said. "Researchers have been waiting for the material with excitement for years already."

Kafka gave his writings to Brod shortly before his own death from tuberculosis in 1924, instructing his friend to burn everything unread. But Brod instead published most of the material, including the novels "The Trial," ''The Castle" and "Amerika."

Aviad Stollman, Judaica Collections Curator at the National Library, said that the majority of the manuscripts are by Brod not Kafka, but that they contained tremendous research and sentimental value.

"For decades these manuscripts were hidden and now we can display and preserve them under proper conditions," he told Israel's Channel 2 TV.

"There are 40 thousand pages, a tremendous amount," he added. "Whoever loves Kafka will be able to see his signature and notes and crossings outs ... We hope the material will be on the library's website soon."

Despite the ruling, Hoffe will be entitled for royalties from any future publication of the documents.

Professor Otto Dov Kulka, a self-described Kafkaphile and retired professor of history at Israel's Hebrew University, supported the court decision.

"The National library has taken care of Einstein's theory of relativity, and we will now take care of the great works of Kafka," he said.

Transitioning from a Stay at Home Wife to a Mom {Motherhood Series}

This post is part of our motherhood series. You can see all the posts here.

This year I have transitioned from working full time, to being a stay at home wife, to preparing to be a stay at home mother.

My Journey

In March, my husband got a killer job promotion that would move us close to our families. Before, we lived over 8 hours away from them and felt discouraged when we looked towards being parents without family support behind us. So, my husband accepted the job and we began plans to move in May. We were elated to finally be moving closer to family and trusted that He would provide for us.

But this would be mean quitting my full time job. I was working at a Christian university and was able to bring in a good income to help our family save for a home, pay off student loans, and save for babies! I began planning to find another full time job in our new area.

Then my husband told me that he thought I should finally become a stay at home wife. We had always talked about it as a option, but never?seriously?considered?it. I figured I would work full time until I was 8 or 9 months pregnant with our first and then stay home. But all of a sudden I was planning on developing my blog and my business with plans of being a stay at home wife.

So in April we decided to start trying for a baby with plans that it probably wouldn?t happen for a few months. Well what do you know, the Lord blessed us our very first month trying :) We got pregnant in April?and then found out in July that it?s Twins!

So then in May, Jason started his new job and we moved to just an hour and a half away from our family! I am now expecting twin boys that should be making their appearance sometime in December.

Transitioning from a Stay at Home Wife

Since May, I have been a stay at home wife. And I am so thankful. The Lord blessed us with this?opportunity. I have been able to be home during morning sickness, take a trip with my Mom to visit our Grandparents, spend time on my business, my blog, and a new website my husband and I are starting.

Now as I approach my third trimester, I am starting to get the pregnancy aches and pains. I am moving much slower and feeling the weight of my sweet boys. But because I am home I am able to prepare for them.

I have the time and energy to devote to cleaning out the guest room and preparing it to become our nursery. I have the time to make real whole foods recipes for my family. And I have time to adjust to being at home.

I can better plan what our days will look like once we have babies. I get to?participate?in Bible studies with my sisters, and develop good habits at home.

I am so thankful for this time at home.?

I am establishing our home and our routine now. And as I look forward to being a stay at home mom I am thankful that God has blessed us with this?opportunity?and that I can transition into life a stay at home mom now.

What I am Doing with My Time

This has been a great time of transition and I am so glad that I have had this time at home. I made sure that my time at home alone would not be wasted and I have invested time into becoming a better wife and future mother.

1) I have honing my homemaking skills. I am figuring out how to have better cleaning and?organizing?schedules and routines.

2) I have worked on our finances and tried to get better at budgeting (this is always something I am working on)!!

3)?I have had the time to look into how to naturally care for my babies such as cloth diapering and making my own baby food.

4)?I have the time and energy to shop at different grocery stores and plan our meals to save money and eat healthy.

5) I have invested time into learning how to cook a ?from scratch? whole foods diet?including homemade breads, tortillas, soups and stews, desserts, meals and more!

Because of this time at home I have been able to hone skills and develop new ones that ?I simply won?t have time to invest in once we have our babies. Now I can enter motherhood with these skills under my belt and am better?prepared?to be a mother and keeper of my home because God gave us the?opportunity?to stay home before kids.?

*Please note: This is our situation and how God directed our paths. I do not think this is the path for everyone. I never thought I would stay home full time before kids and yet God knew a better plan for us!

I?m curious what season you are in right now? Do you have kids? Do you stay home or do you work? Share with us so we can get to know each other better! Leave a comment below or hop on over to my Facebook page to join in the discussion.

Neuroimaging May Help Determine Risk of Relapse | Psych Central ...

By Janice Wood Associate News Editor
Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on October 13, 2012

Neuroimaging May Help Determine Risk of RelapseMeasuring brain activity through neuroimaging can help predict who is likely to have an easier time getting off drugs and alcohol, and who will need extra help, according to new research from Indiana University.

?We can also see how brain activity changes as people recover from their addictions,? said Joshua Brown, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at Indiana University Bloomington.

Because relapses occur so frequently, there is a need for improved methods of treatment and relapse prevention, he said.

Brown noted?that one potential cause for relapse is deficient self-regulatory control over behavior and decision-making. This lack of self-regulatory ability in people who are substance dependent has been associated with dysfunction of a mesolimbic-frontal brain network, according to Brown.

Reduced activity within this self-regulatory brain network has been implicated in relapses, but the specific relationship between this network, self-regulatory ability and recovery is yet to be determined, he added.

The new study explores neurophysiological and cognitive indicators of self-regulatory ability in a group of substance dependent individuals during their first three months of addiction treatment.

Researchers tested the participants? risk-taking inclinations through what is called a Balloon Analog Risk Task, a game in which the participants can decide whether to add increasing amounts of air to a balloon, gaining rewards until it pops.

Those who took greater risks were shown to have reduced brain activity, the researcher noted, while those who took less risk showed greater brain activity.

After three months, those people who were successful in treatment also demonstrated a pattern of brain activation that coincided with the risk level of cues during the balloon task.

In individuals who relapsed, risk-related activation was limited to certain brain regions, possibly signaling the anticipated reward rather than the risk of negative outcome, he adds.

Cuban missile crisis misconceptions endure after 50 years

HAVANA (AP) ? The world stood at the brink of Armageddon for 13 days in October 1962 when President John F. Kennedy drew a symbolic line in the Atlantic and warned of dire consequences if Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev dared to cross it.

An American U-2 spy plane flying high over Cuba had snapped aerial photographs of Soviet ballistic missile sites that could launch nuclear warheads with little warning at the United States, just 90 miles away. It was the height of the Cold War, and many people feared nuclear war would annihilate human civilization.

Soviet ships carrying nuclear equipment steamed toward Kennedy's "quarantine" zone around the island, but turned around before reaching the line. "We're eyeball-to-eyeball, and I think the other fellow just blinked," U.S. Secretary of State Dean Rusk famously said, a quote that largely came to be seen as defining the crisis.

In the five decades since the nuclear standoff between Washington and Moscow, much of the long-held conventional wisdom about the missile crisis has been knocked down, including the common belief that Kennedy's bold brinksmanship ruled the day.

On the eve of the 50th anniversary of the Cuban missile crisis, historians now say it was behind-the-scenes compromise rather than a high-stakes game of chicken that resolved the faceoff, that both Washington and Moscow wound up winners and that the crisis lasted far longer than 13 days.

Declassified documents, oral histories and accounts from decision-makers involved in the standoff have turned up new information that scholars say provides lessons for leaders embroiled in contemporary crises such as the one in Syria, where President Bashar Assad has ignored international pleas to stop attacks on civilians in an uprising that has killed more than 32,000 people.

Another modern standoff is over Iran, which the West accuses of pursuing a nuclear weapons program. In a recent U.N. speech, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu drew a red line on a cartoon bomb to illustrate that a nuclear Tehran would not be tolerated.

"Take Iran, which I have called a Cuban Missile Crisis in slow motion," said Graham Allison, author of the groundbreaking study of governmental decision-making "Essence of Decision: Explaining the Cuban Missile Crisis."

"This same process is looming on the current trajectory, inexorably, toward a confrontation at which an American president is going to have to choose between attacking Iran to prevent it becoming a nuclear weapons state or acquiescing and then confronting a nuclear weapons state," Allison said.

"Kennedy's idea would be, 'Don't let this reach the point of confrontation,'" he added. "The risks of catastrophe are too great."

Among the common beliefs about the Cuban missile crisis that have been reevaluated:

___

CONVENTIONAL WISDOM: The crisis was a triumph of U.S. brinkmanship.

REALITY: Historians say the resolution of the standoff was really a triumph of backdoor diplomacy.

Kennedy resisted pressure from aides advising that he cede nothing to Moscow and even consider a preemptive strike. He instead engaged in intense behind-the-scenes diplomacy with the Soviets, other countries and the U.N. secretary-general.

Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy met secretly with the Soviet ambassador on Oct. 27 and conveyed an olive branch from his brother: Washington would publicly reject any invasion of Cuba, and Khrushchev would withdraw the missiles from the island. The real sweetener was that Kennedy would withdraw Jupiter nuclear missiles from U.S. installations in Turkey, near the Soviet border. It was a secret pledge known only to a handful of presidential advisers that did not emerge until years later.

"As the historical record has expanded, the image of the resolute president has given way to the resolution president," Cuba analyst Peter Kornbluh wrote in an article in the November issue of Cigar Aficionado, an advance copy of which was made available to The Associated Press.

Nevertheless, the brinkmanship myth persists, with President George W. Bush in 2002 citing the missile crisis as a historical lesson in fortitude that justified a preemptive invasion of Iraq.

"The storyline is a lot easier that Kennedy stood steely-resolved, faced Khrushchev down and that's it," said Allison, a professor at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government and former senior defense adviser to several Democratic and Republican administrations. "If you hang tough enough the other guy will eventually yield ? that is actually the lesson that became part of the popular mythology."

____

CONVENTIONAL WISDOM: Washington won, and Moscow lost.

REALITY: The United States came out a winner, but so did the Soviet Union.

The Jupiter missiles are sometimes described as nearly obsolete, but they had come online just months earlier and were fully capable of striking into the Soviet Union. Their withdrawal, along with Kennedy's assurance he would not invade Cuba, gave Khrushchev enough to feel he had saved face and the following day he announced the imminent dismantling of offensive weapons in Cuba.

Soon after, a U.S.-Soviet presidential hotline was established and the two nations initiated discussions that led to the Limited Test Ban treaty and ultimately the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

"The major lesson is the necessity of compromise even when faced with a crisis like that," said Robert Pastor, an international relations professor at American University and former national security adviser for Latin America under President Jimmy Carter.

Pastor said he had many discussions about the missile crisis over the years with his late father-in-law, Robert McNamara, who was Kennedy's defense secretary. Pastor said domestic politics made it tough for both Kennedy and successive presidents to heed that lesson, as evidenced by Kennedy's intense efforts to keep the deal secret.

President Barack Obama, for example, faces considerable pressure to maintain a tough line on Cuba. Among the issues are the U.S. embargo, demands for political change, an American government subcontractor imprisoned in Cuba as an alleged spy and five Cuban intelligence agents serving long sentences in the United States.

"Look at U.S.-Cuban relations right now," Pastor said. "I don't think Obama would consider a compromise, because the pressure on him that 'You gave in to the Cubans' is too great."

__

CONVENTIONAL WISDOM: It was a high-seas showdown.

REALITY: It's true the missile crisis was full of tense moments. On Oct. 27, a U.S. warship dropped depth charges over a nuclear-armed Soviet sub and the Soviets shot down a U-2 spy plane over Cuba. It was "the darkest, most dangerous day of the crisis," Kornbluh said.

Yet after Kennedy on Oct. 22 announced a U.S. naval quarantine around the island to prevent more military equipment from arriving, Khrushchev recalled ships carrying nuclear equipment the following day, according to the 2008 book "One Minute to Midnight" by Michael Dobbs, which was based on newly examined Soviet documents.

That means that on Oct. 24, when Secretary of State Rusk made his famous "eyeball-to-eyeball" statement reacting to supposedly up-to-the-minute intelligence, the vessels were already hundreds of miles away, steaming home.

"This thing about eyeball-to-eyeball, it never was. That confrontation never took place," said Kornbluh, who is a Cuba analyst at the nongovernment National Security Archive, which has spent decades working to get missile crisis documents declassified.

CONVENTIONAL WISDOM: It was an intelligence coup for the CIA.

REALITY: Along with being a day late on the turnaround by Soviet ships, the CIA missed several key developments that would have helped Kennedy and his advisers navigate the crisis.

The CIA learned late in the game about the ballistic missiles' presence in Cuba, and they were already operational by the time Kennedy was informed of their existence.

The agency was also unaware of other, tactical nuclear missiles in Cuba that could have been deployed against a U.S. attack. The Soviets had even positioned nuclear-tipped missiles on a ridge above the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay in preparation for an invasion.

"They were going to obliterate the base," Kornbluh said.

___

CONVENTIONAL WISDOM: The crisis lasted just 13 days.

REALITY: This myth has been perpetuated in part by the title of Robert F. Kennedy's posthumous memoir, "Thirteen Days," as well as the 2000 movie of the same name starring Kevin Costner.

Indeed it was 13 days from Oct. 16, when Kennedy was first told about the missiles, to Oct. 28, when the Soviets announced their withdrawal.

But the "October Crisis," as it is known in Cuba, dragged on for another tense month or so in what Kornbluh dubs the "November Extension," as Washington and Moscow haggled over details of exactly what weapons would be removed.

The Soviet Union also had problems dealing with Fidel Castro, according to a Soviet document made public this month by Svetlana Savranskaya, a Russia analyst for the National Security Archive.

Deputy Premier Anastas Mikoyan traveled to Cuba that Nov. 2 and spent 20 days in tense talks with the Cuban leader, who was angry the Soviets had reached a deal without consulting him. Castro lobbied hard but unsuccessfully to keep the tactical nuclear weapons that the Americans had not learned about.
