Nor'easter causes new outages, slows Sandy recovery

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. power companies expect the nor'easter whipping across the Mid-Atlantic on Wednesday to create additional outages and possibly slow their efforts to restore service to customers left in the dark by Hurricane Sandy nine days ago.

Utilities from the Carolinas to New York reported on their websites that the nor'easter has already knocked out service to over 3,000 customers by Wednesday afternoon.

More than 650,000 homes and businesses were still without power due to Sandy in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, the U.S. Department of Energy said in a report on Wednesday.

"The new storm could delay customer restorations. Crews repairing overhead lines and equipment cannot work in high winds," New York power company Consolidated Edison Inc said Wednesday.

Con Edison said its crews will get more help on Wednesday when 300 mutual aid workers arrive just in time for the nor'easter's arrival, bringing the company's total restoration workforce to over 3,000 utility workers.

The nor'easter will bring rain and heavy winds that could slam trees into power lines, utilities said.

New Jersey power company Public Service Enterprise Group Inc, which has the most customers still without service, said Wednesday it expects to continue to restore power to the remaining 185,000 customers out despite the nor'easter's approach.

While work may continue in the rain, PSEG said federal safety rules prevent line crews from working in bucket trucks when winds are greater than 40 miles per hour.

There have been reports of wind gusts from the nor'easter at over 50 miles per hours, according to weather forecaster AccuWeather.com.

If work has to stop due to the winds, PSEG said, "Crews will resume work when it is safe to do so."

Crews are working 16-hour days, with mandated rest periods and meal breaks. PSEG said it has secured an additional 600 line workers from Pennsylvania, bringing the total to more than 4,600 workers on the ground helping restore power to our customers.

PSEG also said that despite some reports of shortages of wires, poles and transformers at some utilities, "There currently is no shortage of materials.

"This is an incredible restoration job so we continue to seek materials so we can be covered in case the damage in some areas turns out to be greater than anticipated," PSEG said. It noted the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency "has offered to get materials for us, and we will take advantage of that offer."

A spokesman at Jersey Central Power and Light, the utility with the second most customers still without power, told Reuters it had enough supplies of equipment. JCP&L is a unit of Ohio-based FirstEnergy Corp.

Sandy made landfall in New Jersey on the night of October 29, affecting about 8.48 million customers in 21 states. Over the past 24 hours, the Department of Energy said power companies had restored service to about 320,000 customers.

Forex Trading: What Every Trader Needs To Know - Search Forex

A second, or even third, income stream equates into more money for your wallet and less worry for bills or expenses. With the current state of the economy, millions are seeking financial relief. If you are looking for a second income and are thinking about forex trading, look no further than this article.

Open up a mini account when you start trading. This is the next step after practicing and uses real money in moderation. This simply allows you to test drive the market to see which trading techniques work best for you, so that you can see what will provide you with the best profits.

Try to avoid working in too many markets at the same time. Test your skills with major currency pairs before you jump to the uncommon ones. Trying to keep track of positions across many pairs will only confuse you and slow down the rate at which you learn about the markets. This may effect your decision making capabilities, resulting in costly investment maneuvers.

Be sure to steer clear from dealing with rare currency pairs. Popular currency pairs with high liquidity allow you to buy and sell almost instantly due to the number of people trading at any given time. By contrast, it is more difficult to find a trader who wants your rare pairs when you want to sell them.

TIP! Be sure to keep a notebook on you. You can scribble tidbits about the markets any time you find them, no matter where you are.

Analysis has its place, but a prudent overall trading strategy has much more of an effect on your success. If you take the time to understand the market fundamentals, you?ll be able to create a better trading plan and analyze the market more effectively.

Talking to other traders about the Foreign Exchange market can be valuable, but in the end you need to trust your own judgment. While you should listen to outside opinions and give them due emphasis, ultimately it is you that is responsible for making your investment decisions.

You need to be able to customize your automated trading system. You should be able to make changes to both your software and your system, in order for them to fit with your strategy. Make sure that your trading software has everything you will need, not only as a beginner, but as you get more involved down the road.

Always try a demo forex account before you invest real money. It generally takes a full two months to truly get a grasp on the principles that you are practicing with the demo account. Not very many people actually come out ahead at the beginning. The remaining 9 out of 10 are disappointed simply because they have not acquired sufficient know-how.

TIP! Learn about your chosen currency pair. Focusing on one currency pair will help you to become more skilled in trading, whereas trying to become knowledgeable about a bunch all at once will cause you to waste more time gaining info than actually trading shares.

You must protect your forex account by using stop loss orders. Stop losses are like an insurance for your foreign exchange trading account. Without a stop loss order, any unexpected big move in the foreign exchange market can cost you a lot of money. A stop loss order will protect your capital.

Some traders do so well, that forex trading completely replaces their day job. It depends on how good of a trader you wish to be. The first thing you should work on is researching and applying successful trading techniques.

Research your broker when using a managed account. You want a broker that has been performing at least on par with the market. You also want to choose a firm that has been open for more than five years.

TIP! Avoid following the advice you hear regarding the Forex market without thinking it through first. Some of the advice may work for certain traders during specific time periods, but there is no guarantee that it will work with your trading strategy.

Researchers find a viral symbiont of a protozoan parasite increases virulence to the human host

When humans have parasites, the organisms live in our bodies, co-opt our resources and cause disease. However, it turns out that parasites themselves can have their own co-habitants.

Researchers from Harvard Medical School, Brigham and Women's Hospital and SUNY Upstate Medical University have found that the pathogenicity of the sexually transmitted protozoan parasite Trichomonas vaginalisthe cause of trichomoniasisis fueled by a viral invader. Trichomoniasis infections are more common than all bacterial STDs combined. Annually, trichomoniasis affects nearly 250 million people, typically as vaginitis in women and urethritis in men.

"Trichomoniasis is associated with devastating consequences for women due to inflammation and related risks of reproductive disease," said Raina Fichorova, leader of the research team as well as associate professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive biology at Brigham and Women's Hospital. "Our future goal is to determine how the viral symbiont and its inflammatory 'halo' affect the risk of preterm delivery and low birth weight."

"This is only one of two incidences that we know of for which the pathogenicity of a protozoan virus has been characterized," said Max Nibert, Harvard Medical School professor of microbiology and immunology and co-author of the paper. "When found together, the result is an increase in virulence of the protozoan parasite to the human host, leading to exacerbated disease."

This study, which was initiated by a Harvard Catalyst Pilot grant, will be published online in Public Library of Science (PLOS) One.

Rather than invading human cells, Trichomonas vaginalis attaches to their surface and feeds on them, sometimes remaining asymptomatic for a period of time. The virus, called Trichomonasvirus, infects the protozoan and increases its pathogenic power by fueling virus-specific inflammatory responses.

Moreover, carrying the protozoan parasite predisposes women to acquire sexually transmitted viruses, particularly HIV and human papillomavirus, or HPV, both of which can lead to serious diseases such as AIDS and cervical cancer, respectively. Fichorova and Nibert have recently obtained funding from the Harvard University Center for AIDS Research to find out if the virus itself is directly responsible for increased HIV risk.

According to Nibert, the virus-parasite symbiosis is the norm rather than the exception with this particular protozoan. Upwards of 80 percent of Trichomonas vaginalis isolates carry the virus. "Unlike flu viruses, for example, this virus can't spread by jumping out of the cell into another one," said Nibert, who has pioneered molecular biology work on double-stranded RNA viruses, a category that includes Trichomonasvirus. "It just spreads between cells when they divide or mate."

According to the researchers, it is this double-stranded nature of the viral genome that contributes to increased virulence of the protozoan parasite. "The double-stranded RNA seems important to the signaling process," added Nibert.

Currently, trichomoniasis is treated with the antibiotic metronidazole. But this treatment is only effective on the protozoan. "When the medication is used, the dying or stressed protozoa release unharmed virions, which then signal to the human cells," explained Fichorova. As a result, the symptoms are aggravated, and this in turn might increase the danger it poses to pregnant women and their children.

"Ahead is more research to better understand the viral cycle and structural features that might be vulnerable to drugs, which will lead to opening new doors for better treatment of trichomoniasis and related diseases," said Fichorova. "Our complementary expertise, interdisciplinary team efforts and strong collaboration is the key to our future success."

Nibert added that basic research on Trichomonas vaginalis is not nearly as supported as he thinks it should be. "It is unfortunate that a human pathogen of such worldwide significance has been neglected to such a degree," he said.

(AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's years-long quest for the presidency is ending with a last-minute round of campaigning in one state he's showered with attention and another he's largely ignored.

After he cast his vote near his Boston-area home, Romney was visiting Cleveland and Pittsburgh on Tuesday, betting an eleventh-hour appeal to working-class voters in Ohio and Pennsylvania will help him defeat President Barack Obama.

His running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, is following a similar strategy, using his travel time after voting in his Wisconsin hometown to join Romney in Cleveland and then visit Richmond, Va. The campaign isn't ruling out additional swing-state appearances as well. Tuesday night, he'll await returns with Romney in Boston.

Romney told reporters he was feeling "very good" as he and his wife, Ann, appeared at a polling precinct near his Belmont, Mass., home just before 9 a.m. EST.

Romney spent less than three minutes completing his ballot in the voting booth, which did not have a curtain. Asked who he voted for, he said with a smile, "I think you know." It was the first time he had answered a direct question from the traveling press corps since late September.

"Help us win this," the former governor said Monday, in the midst of a five-state slog that was supposed to be his last day on the campaign trail.

Romney's focus on Ohio is not a surprise. He has spent more time campaigning there over the last year than any other state. And no Republican has won the presidency without carrying the Midwestern battleground.

But Romney has spent very little time in Pennsylvania, a state that hasn't supported a Republican presidential contender in nearly a quarter-century. As polls showed the race tightening there, Romney launched a statewide advertising campaign just last week.

Dismissed as desperation by Democrats, the Pennsylvania trip will at the very least send a message that Romney did all he could to deny Obama a second term.

"We can't let up now. We need to keep going until the final polls close tomorrow night," Romney political director Rich Beeson wrote supporters Monday. "With an election this important, let's leave it all on the field."

A recent Pew Research Center poll showed that non-college-educated white voters across the nation supported Romney over Obama 57 percent to 35 percent. But in Ohio, polls taken in late October suggested Romney was virtually tied with Obama among the group.

Romney needs to do better facing Obama's small, but stubborn, lead in polls in both states. His path is complicated, in part, by his opposition to the government bailout that helped rescue the nation's auto industry.

Romney is scheduled to wrap up his day in Boston, where his national headquarters is based, for an election-night celebration at the Boston Convention Center.
