A DIY Space Suit for the 99 Percent
Taking a balloon up into the lower stratosphere may seem crazy, but to Cameron M. Smith it's an opportunity to fulfill a lifelong dream. The 45-year-old Portland State University anthropologist couldn't join NASA's aviation program because of his poor eyesight. Lacking the funds to buy a ticket on a private space flight, he decided to take matters into his own hands.

Donkey of death may have killed TX mayor

Mayor William ?Bill? Bohlke of Hollywood Park, Texas (circled) was apparently killed by his 500-pound donkey Monday, said Chief Deputy David Soward of the Atascosa County Sheriff?s Office. Soward said the donkey remains on the ranch and an exact determinationcause of death is pending.

Town of Hollywood Park

Mayor William ?Bill? Bohlke of Hollywood Park, Texas (circled) was apparently killed by his 500-pound donkey Monday, said Chief Deputy David Soward of the Atascosa County Sheriff?s Office. Soward said the donkey remains on the ranch and an exact determination of the cause of death is pending.

The prime suspect in the death a Texas mayor is an angry donkey. William Bohlke, mayor of Hollywood Park, was found dead on his ranch Monday night, the San Antonio Express-News reported.

Hours earlier, Atascosa County Chief Deputy David Soward said, he was kicked and trampled by the 500-pound male donkey.

It wasn?t known what set the animal off, but Soward explained that males ?can become very aggressive, very mean, sometimes triggered by a female in heat.?

Flags at Hollywood Park City Hall were flown at half-mast Tuesday in honor of the 65-year-old mayor.

In a statement on the city?s website, Bohlke?s family said he ?dearly loved serving you, our community, and we only wish he was here to continue doing so.?

The City Council will meet Sept. 8 to discuss a replacement mayor.

The fate of the donkey, which remains on the ranch, has not yet been determined, according to Soward.

Edwards refutes rumors of move to Penske Racing

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? Carl Edwards dismissed a rumor Wednesday that he will join Penske Racing next season.

Edwards brought the rumor up unprompted during a national teleconference in an effort to silence the discussion. He is in the first year of a new contract with Roush Fenway Racing, but there has been speculation he is trying to negotiate an out to take the opening at Penske.

"There's been a lot of talk about me driving the 22 car, that's impossible," Edwards said. "First of all, I haven't discussed that with anyone ever. And, (number) two, I am contracted to drive the 99 car."

Edwards said he felt he should address the rumor because sponsors have heard the talk and have asked the driver his plans.

Edwards went through lengthy contract negotiations last season with Roush and decided in August to stay with the No. 99 team. He ended the year tied with Tony Stewart in the championship race, but lost the title on a tiebreaker.

This season has been a struggle. He's winless and in danger of not even qualifying for the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship. That is apparently fueled the speculation that he's got a performance clause in his Roush contract that would permit him to leave the organization.

With Penske Racing switching to Ford next season ? Edwards is a centerpiece of Ford's marketing campaign ? it's made sense that there could be interest in the No. 22 seat that opened when AJ Allmendinger was released after a failed drug test.

But, it's believed team owner Roger Penske is close to announcing a deal with Joey Logano. Penske said Saturday at Bristol that Logano is a candidate for the ride, and J.D. Gibbs admitted Logano is looking at other opportunities outside of Joe Gibbs Racing.

What in the Hell Is This? [Video]

Nokia has a new teaser video on its YouTube page. In it a girl—a very stylish girl—rides her bike along the waterfront of a Finnish neighborhood (well, presumably Finnish). At the end appears the text "Things Are About to Change" with a date: 9.05.12. Of course, this is the date of the Nokia event next week. And if we had to guess, it will have something to do with Windows Phone 8. But what in the hell does that have to do with a girl on a bike? More »

Insurance Gap Looms For Brawley Residents As More Quakes ...

BRAWLEY (CBSLA.com) ? Homeowners in the Imperial Valley and across the Southland may be rethinking their insurance coverage after a swarm of light to moderate earthquakes has left the region rattled.

KNX 1070?s Pat Haslem reports only 12 percent of California homeowners have earthquake insurance, which means a majority of California homeowners could be on some shaky ground if a major temblor hit.

As of Monday morning, over 300 quakes have been recorded in what is known as the Brawley Seismic Zone, knocking out power to 2,500 homes and shifting 20 mobile homes off their foundations.

Brawley, a small farming community located near the Salton Sea, last experienced a similar earthquake swarm in 2009.

Pete Maraga of the Insurance Information Network of California said the quakes are a sobering reminder for homeowners in the region.

?With the standard homeowner policy, that does not include any kind of damage from an earthquake,? said Maraga. ?It?s a separate policy, it?s separate coverage that you have to get, different than your homeowner policy.?

A standard earthquake policy will not only cover the structure of a home, but also all contents kept inside the structure as well as any additional living expenses incurred by the quake.

And while many homeowners expect the federal government to provide benefits in the event of a disaster, but Maraga said that notion was all but dispelled after Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast in 2005.

?The most that you can get in a FEMA grant is about $30,000, and then you can get a low-interest loan through SBA (U.S. Small Business Adminstration),? he said. ?Even though that is low-interest, you have to understand that you?re gonna have to pay that back and pay off your mortgage as well?with the earthquake policy, you don?t have to pay anything back.?

Scientists from California Geological Survey, US Geological Survey, Cal Tech and the Southern California Earthquake Center warned Monday of the potential of an earthquake as large as or larger than Sunday?s M5.5 earthquake that could ?cause damage to older structures?.

Oil rises more than $1, tropical storm threatens supply

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Oil futures rose more than a dollar on Monday, with Brent climbing above $115 per barrel, on supply worries as Tropical Storm Isaac threatened to interrupt most U.S. offshore oil production in the Gulf of Mexico.

Oil prices got a further boost from hopes of more U.S. stimulus measures, which would improve the outlook for demand from the world's top consumer of oil.

Brent crude futures had climbed $1.26 to $114.85 a barrel by 0824 GMT, after rising to a high of $115.50 earlier in the session. U.S. crude was up $1.13 at $97.28.

"The storm will have a temporary impact on prices. But everyone is waiting for the European Central Bank and U.S. Federal Reserve meetings ahead," said Tony Nunan, a risk manager at Mitsubishi Corp in Tokyo.

"Technically, Brent has been strong, so it looks like it's continuing that trend after the temporary blip on Friday and simply reversing the falls."

Oil prices fell on Friday after a report that the International Energy Agency is likely to tap strategic oil reserves as soon as September, dropping its resistance to a U.S.-led plan.

But prices are now turning upwards ahead of the annual U.S. Jackson Hole meeting of central bankers and economists later this week, where Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke will deliver a speech that will be scoured for clues on a third round of quantitative easing.

The markets will also look for policy signals from the euro zone ahead of a September 6 meeting of the European Central Bank.

"The markets are now getting excited about the possibility of additional monetary stimulus by the Federal Reserve," said Ben Le Brun, a Sydney-based market analyst at OptionsXpress.

"I don't think traders will want to be caught short ahead of the Jackson Hole meeting especially when there's an upside risk."

SUPPLY DISRUPTION FEARS

Oil prices drew support from the threat to U.S. offshore oil production in the Gulf of Mexico from Tropical Storm Isaac, which is expected to strengthen to a Category 2 hurricane and hit the Gulf Coast somewhere between Florida and Louisiana by midweek.

Meteorologists at Weather Insight, an arm of Thomson Reuters, predict the storm will spur short-term shutdowns of 85 percent of U.S. offshore oil production capacity and 68 percent of natural gas output.

The Gulf of Mexico accounts for about 23 percent of U.S. oil production and 7 percent of natural gas output, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).

About 30 percent of U.S. natural gas processing plant capacity and 44 percent of the country's refining capacity also line the Gulf Coast, the EIA said.

There are other supply worries as well.

Delays in Iraq's pipeline construction threaten to stall production at Royal Dutch Shell's Majnoon oilfield for at least three months, forcing the field to miss a 2012 target of 175,000 barrels per day.

In Norway, oil services workers broke off wage talks with oil companies on Friday, taking the sector a step closer to its second strike within two months.

Norway's vital oil sector was hamstrung last month when production workers held a 16-day strike over pay and the right to early retirement, driving up oil prices.

An upcoming maintenance-related drop in North Sea output and ongoing Middle East turmoil also underpinned Brent prices.

Britain's largest oilfield, Buzzard, which is the single biggest contributor to the Forties crude oil stream and usually sets the price of the Brent benchmark, will shut next month, suspending output until mid-October.

Adding to Middle East uncertainties, Iran's foreign minister urged delegates at a Non-Aligned Movement developing nations summit on Sunday to oppose sanctions imposed by the West.

U.S. gasoline prices also increased after a fire at Venezuela's biggest refinery, the 645,000 barrels per day (bpd) Amuay plant.

Romney faces balancing act with convention, storm

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? The political risk was slight for Mitt Romney in scrapping the first day of his Florida convention in the face of Tropical Storm Isaac: TV networks weren't planning to broadcast it live anyway.

As the storm veered toward New Orleans, however, the decision about what to do next was fraught with peril. Romney is trying to balance celebrating his presidential nomination with being mindful of the ghost of Hurricane Katrina and the stain George W. Bush's handling of it left on the GOP.

"You don't want to be having hoopla and dancing when you have the nation focused on tragedy and suffering," said Al Hoffman, a Republican from West Palm Beach and former finance chairman of the Republican National Committee.

The next few days will test Romney's ability to both present himself to the American people as a plausible alternative to President Barack Obama and to lead a party still smarting from the image hit it took in the aftermath of the 2005 Gulf Coast devastation.

Since then, Republicans have been so sensitive to the political danger around hurricanes ? and the appearance of partying at a time of trouble ? that they delayed the start of their national convention by a day in 2008 when Hurricane Gustav bore down on the Gulf, a full 1,200 miles away from where delegates were gathering in St. Paul, Minn.

Four years later, a storm again has delayed the start of the convention ? and again is barreling toward New Orleans, the city that Katrina so badly damaged.

Memories of Katrina hung heavy over Tampa as Republican delegates traveled here to anoint the party's new standard-bearer. All over Florida ? a critical battleground state ? people were preparing for the worst. Homes and shops were boarded up in Key West. About 800 miles northwest in the Florida panhandle, the Wal-Mart in Destin, Fla., had sold out of bottled water.

By Sunday afternoon, Tampa was cloud-covered and windy outside the hall where Romney is to accept the nomination Thursday night. Inside, tense Romney advisers huddled to figure out how to proceed.

"It's a mess all around and it's fraught with risk," said Sally Bradshaw, a Florida Republican and longtime senior aide to former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush. "It's not good for anybody ? particularly the people impacted by the storm."

Weather was recognized as potential trouble when Republicans chose to hold their convention in Florida during hurricane season, a decision made well before Romney locked up the nomination.

Beyond the safety and image concerns, Isaac presents another wrinkle for Romney: It allows Obama to show leadership and flex the levers of his administration to help people bracing for a storm.

As forecasts grew grim, Obama dispatched the Federal Emergency Management Agency to assist, and the White House said the president was closely monitoring the storm.

"The president also told the governor to let him know if there are any unmet needs or additional resources the administration could provide, including in support of efforts to ensure the safety of those visiting the state for the Republican National Convention," the White House said Sunday.

The president had no immediate plans to visit. But he might ? as most presidents do ? if the damage is severe. And if he does, Romney would have to weigh whether to proceed with his convention or scrap more parts of it ? and cede the limelight to the man who holds the office he wants.

Mindful of the danger of appearing to put politics before safety, Vice President Joe Biden, the Obama campaign's surrogate-in-chief, canceled a campaign swing through Florida on Monday and Tuesday.

Back in Tampa, Romney's convention planners were busy working to cram four carefully scripted days of speechmaking and celebration into just three. The announcement delaying the start of the convention came late Saturday, with Romney mindful of the good politics of putting safety before, well, politics.

"The safety of those in Isaac's path is of the utmost importance," Romney said in a tweet late Saturday.

Insisting on a four-day affair could have put delegates' safety at risk, while tying up law enforcement and emergency officials who otherwise would be dispatched to deal with storm fallout. That would have left a black mark on the convention, with potentially lasting political consequences in a critical battleground state and perhaps elsewhere.

Romney's decision drew praise.

"Governor Romney and his team have handled the situation correctly," former Gov. Bush, a Republican, told The Associated Press. He added: "There is no reason to cancel the event."

Michigan delegate Saul Anuzis agreed, saying: "It's such a huge logistical event, you can't call it off."

The question Romney and his team are weighing: how to proceed with the party while being sensitive to the uncertainty of Isaac and its potential to wreak havoc on the Gulf Coast, which has become a symbol of dysfunctional government under a Republican administration.

Among the considerations: whether to tone down plans to sharply criticize Obama and focus more heavily on Romney's other goal, promoting his own vision. Speakers scheduled for Monday had planned to start making the case against Obama.

"Even though the days will be abbreviated, I absolutely believe we'll be able to get our message out," senior Romney adviser Russ Schriefer, in charge of the convention's planning, said.

Added Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus: "We're moving forward, but we are going to be nimble."

Republican strategists suggested Romney celebrate without going overboard.

"You can tone down the happy-days-are-here-again a bit," said Rich Galen, a veteran Republican consultant in Washington. "Maybe you don't have the biggest balloon drop in history."

Ga. murder case uncovers terror plot by soldiers

(AP) ? Prosecutors say a murder case against four soldiers in Georgia has revealed they formed an anarchist militia within the U.S. military with plans to overthrow the federal government.

One of the accused troops, Pfc. Michael Burnett, pleaded guilty Monday to manslaughter and gang charges in the December slayings of former soldier Michael Roark and his girlfriend, 17-year-old Tiffany York.

Burnett told a Long County judge that Roark, who had just left the Army, knew of the militia group's plans and was killed because he was "a loose end."

Prosecutor Isabel Pauley says the group bought $87,000 worth of guns and bomb-making materials and plotted to take over Fort Stewart, bomb targets in nearby Savannah and Washington state, as well as assassinate the president.

Ten Minutes to a Less Stressful Life | Robin Patino

?

The benefits of meditation are being touted everywhere, from psychological journals to health and fitness magazines to holistic websites and even in mainstream media.?

It?s one thing to understand and agree with the positive benefits of a meditation practice, but another thing to incorporate it into your busy life. It?s kind of like understanding that certain foods are bad for you, but still continuing to eat them until someone gives you an easy and tasty substitute.?

Time and again, I hear people complain about their monkey mind and how they just can?t stop their thoughts. As if their thoughts were in control of them. That?s the first step in meditation?realizing that you do indeed have control over your thoughts. And, no big surprise, it is the main challenge that we all face in beginning a meditation practice.?

I have found that it is easier if you can think of the mind as a muscle. Look to the recent Olympic games as an example. The first time Michael Phelps jumped into the pool, he could not break records with his swimming. It took practice, and the focus on a goal. While we won?t win any gold medals from meditating, we will gain a peace of mind that makes our day-to-day life much easier and healthier.?

So how do we begin training the mind to be quiet, to build the muscle of focus and concentration?

Outnumbered 3 to 1: Securing a home for the working family - Guest ...

All families have their dreams to live comfortably in their own home, a dream that for many is rewarded while others are not as lucky; but why is that? Many working families are able to find homes for sale that they find interesting and very livable but don?t necessarily buy. Is it the various factors in life that keep us from buying, do we simply not have the guts to make that move; or are we unable to qualify for the right mortgage rates? In the end is it because of banks that so many of us can?t fulfill that dream of owning a home?
Buying a home is challenging no question there, but for families that are ready to make that transition they should be able to legitimately have that option available. Banks shouldn?t be able to dictate our lives; when families are ready to buy, obtaining a mortgage to afford a home shouldn?t be as challenging as it may appear. In fact many of us are unaware that the bank is not the only option to obtain a mortgage; researching other financial providers or portals like lowestrates.com and the mortgage rates they provide, can help homebuyers find an easier way to get their dream home.

These providers act as an alternative and may offer you a mortgage rate that is a little less than what you may find by just going with your bank. After all even a slightly lower percentage on a mortgage adds up to thousands of dollars in interest saved; and that money saved can be used to help provide for your family in other ways. Imagine how much more you can put away for your children?s education by securing a home at the lowest possible mortgage rate you can afford.

Safety and security are two of the most important factors in providing for your family especially with buying your family home. Taking the time to find a good deal on a mortgage can ensure your family has a safe home and are a little more financially secure. They say knowledge is power and by getting informed of what else is out there, you have that power to put your family in their own home.

Republicans have adopted a party platform on immigration that would require employers nationwide to verify workers? legal status and deny federal financing to universities that allow illegal immigrant students to enroll at lower in-state tuition rates.

In their debates this week in Tampa, Fla., over the party platform, Republican delegates hammered out an immigration plank calling for tough border enforcement and opposing ?any forms of amnesty? for illegal immigrants, instead endorsing ?humane procedures to encourage illegal aliens to return home voluntarily,? a policy of self-deportation.

The party?s platform stance comes as Mitt Romney has been moving to court Hispanic voters before the general election. During the nominating fight last year, he took a hard line on immigration, embracing the concept of ?self-deportation? and saying he would veto legislation known as the Dream Act, which would give legal status to illegal immigrants who came to the United States when they were children.

But recently, Mr. Romney has sought to soften his stance, saying he would consider a Dream Act for illegal immigrants who serve in the military.

The party platform offers no support for that proposal. A number of immigration amendments were offered by Kris Kobach, a conservative who is secretary of state of Kansas and was an author of laws in Arizona and several other states to crack down on illegal immigration.

Mr. Kobach proposed the plank calling for mandatory use by employers of a federal electronic system known as E-Verify to confirm the legal immigration status of new hires. ?If you really want to create a job tomorrow, you can remove an illegal alien today,? Mr. Kobach said.

At his urging, the delegates also adopted a call to complete a double-layer border fence and to end federal lawsuits challenging state enforcement laws like Arizona?s.

The distance ? at least on paper ? between the Republican party and mainstream Hispanic organizations was highlighted on Wednesday when the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda, a coalition that includes 30 of the country?s largest Latino groups, issued a list of proposals it will promote at both the Republican and Democratic conventions. The coalition endorsed passage of the Dream Act for all undocumented students as well as ?comprehensive immigration reform? to give millions of other illegal immigrants an ?earned path to legalization.?

The Hispanic groups want to ?demilitarize? the southwest border and curtail state and local enforcement of immigration laws. Though Hispanics generally favor Democrats, they have shown signs of cooling on President Obama, who pledged to pursue immigration reform as a candidate in 2008 but who only recently has drawn accolades from immigrant rights groups by taking executive action to halt deportations of hundreds of thousands of young illegal immigrants who came here when they were children.

Both campaigns are scrambling to court Hispanics because of their potential clout in swing states including Florida, Nevada and Colorado.

Russian court acquits Kasparov regarding rally

MOSCOW (AP) ? A Russian court unexpectedly acquitted opposition leader and chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov on Friday of participating in an unauthorized rally.

Kasparov, an anti-Vladimir Putin activist and former world chess champion, was detained Aug. 17, as he was attending a rally in support of the feminist punk band Pussy Riot outside the Moscow court where three of its members were being sentenced to two years in prison. He was violently rounded up by several riot policemen and thrown into a police van along with dozens of other protesters.

Kasparov also was later questioned after a police officer accused him of biting his hand during the detention.

But the Khamovniki court, where Pussy Riot members had been sentenced, cleared him of charges regarding the rally.

"This is a historic day ? the courts have stopped trusting the police," Kasparov said after leaving the court room, according to his website.

Russian courts are notorious for jailing and fining opposition leaders and Kremlin critics. The law was recently changed regarding public gatherings to dramatically raise the fine for taking part in an unauthorized one to 300,000 rubles (about $9,000).

Kasparov says he's now planning to file a complaint against his detention and a libel case against his accuser.

Kasparov, who is considered by some to have been the best player in chess history, retired from top-level professional play in 2005 to become a political activist. He is a vocal critic of Putin and the leader of the United Civil Front opposition group.

Private group to run Philly's Catholic high schools

By NBC News staff and wire services

Faced with high costs and low enrollment, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia is relinquishing control of its Roman Catholic high schools and special education centers to a private foundation, church leaders said.

Archbishop Charles Chaput announced Tuesday that the?Faith in the Future Foundation, based in Philadelphia,?will oversee 17 secondary and four special education schools beginning Sept. 1.

The partnership creates a new independent Catholic school system that serves about 15,000 students on a $128 million budget.

The archdiocese also serves?about 49,000 elementary students and will not be affected by the new deal. Church officials said they hope the new partnership with the foundation, formed by local Catholic business leaders six?months ago, will reinvigorate Philadelphia?s 120-year-old educational system hit hard by budget cuts and decline in enrollment.

?Certainly, on the enrollment side and the cost side, our schools have been shrinking for years, and we have to find new ways to partner,? Bishop Michael Fitzgerald, who oversees education for the archdiocese,?told The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Chaput said he hoped the partnership will lead to a sustainable model for local religious education. The lay group can "provide a level of creativity we wouldn't be able to achieve on our own, and a broader level of community participation," he said.

The foundation was established following an outpouring of support for four Catholic high schools that were targeted for shuttering in June. About $12 million?was?generated to keep the schools open, according to local media reports.

The original mission of the foundation, led by former Cigna Corp. chief executive H. Edward Hanway, was to strengthen all local Catholic high schools through fundraising and marketing. The Faith in the Future Foundation will not be paid during its five-year contract with the archdiocese, he said.

"The independence of the Catholic secondary system, with the schools of special education, was critical to our ability to more fully address the fundraising and enrollment needs of our schools," said Hanway in a statement. "With capacity available to educate an additional 15,000 students, we fully intend to grow."

The schools will still get religious and academic curricula from the archdiocese's Office of Catholic Education, but those administrators will now report to the foundation, Hanway said.

All Catholic high school teachers are union members and will remain employees of the archdiocese, according to church officials. Union contracts will not be affected under the new deal, according to the archdiocese.

Hippo stuck in SAfrica swimming pool

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? A hefty hippo chased away from his herd at a South African game reserve has found a refreshing place to relax: the lodge's swimming pool. Now it's stuck there.

The young hippopotamus plopped into the pool on Tuesday at the Monate Conservation Lodge north of Johannesburg. The pool is big enough for the hippo to swim but it's eight feet deep with no steps and "there's no way he can come out," lodge manager Ruby Ferreira told The Associated Press on Thursday.

A game capture team will sedate the hippo and lift it out of the pool with a crane, said MuIsabel Wentzel of South Africa's National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Much of the water has already been drained to make the extraction easier. A veterinarian will be present during operation hippo extraction on Friday.

Wentzel said the 4-year-old hippo's mother gave birth recently, and more dominant males forced him from the herd.

The staff has been feeding the hippo. Ferreira said it's been noticeably relaxed with no other hippos fighting it for dominance, though the water in the pool has been getting mucky with hippo poop. The pool will be entirely drained before the hippo is lifted out.

Because the hippo was chased away by his herd, it will be moved to another animal sanctuary, Ferreira said.

Study attempts to reverse autoimmunity in type 1 diabetes

ScienceDaily (Aug. 23, 2012) ? Results from a novel experimental therapy for Type 1 diabetes that boosts parts of the healthy immune system are reported August 23 in the scientific journal Diabetes. The trial was led by Carla Greenbaum, MD, Diabetes Research Program director at Benaroya Research Institute at Virginia Mason (BRI), and sponsored by the Immune Tolerance Network (ITN), a clinical trial network funded by the National Institutes of Health. The trial took a unique two-pronged approach to treating Type 1diabetes in newly diagnosed participants. Two drugs were administered in combination. One drug interferes with the immune response that causes Type 1 diabetes while a second drug simultaneously boosted the part of the immune response that usually regulates overactive immune cells.

Over 1 million people in the United States have Type 1 diabetes and the incidence is growing. In this disease, the body's immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, called beta cells. However, at the time of diagnosis with Type 1 diabetes, a small number of beta cells may remain active in many individuals. Since even small amounts of natural insulin production can decrease the long-term effects of diabetes, therapies that attempt to rescue these remaining cells are badly needed.

In the clinical research trial, the combination of the two drugs Proleukin (IL-2) and Rapamune (sirolimus) were administered to see whether the drugs would affect the immune system to halt the autoimmune destruction of the remaining beta cells. The authors of the study describe successful boosting of regulatory components of the immune system in all nine subjects treated in the trial. However, other elements of the immune system also were expanded that were not anticipated. The temporary impairment of beta cell function led the authors to conclude that this drug combination was not having the desired overall effect. Monitoring of the insulin production in the nine subjects indicated that the beta cell preservation goal was not achieved, and the study was therefore stopped. "This study result has been extremely important to scientists looking for ways to stop the immune attack," says Dr. Greenbaum. "Our aim would be to harness the good effects of this therapy while preventing the bad effects." Participants who haven't yet completed the study will continue to be followed.

"The clinical and mechanistic findings from this study can help guide future treatments that boost good immunity," says Gerald Nepom, MD, PhD, Director of ITN. "This was an important clinical trial that will improve the design of subsequent trials to rescue beta cells in Type 1 diabetes."

Chris Brown, Drake sued again over NYC club brawl

NEW YORK (AP) ? A model who was injured during a bottle-throwing nightclub brawl between Chris Brown and Drake is suing both singers and the owners of the New York nightclub.

Romain Julien said in a lawsuit filed Monday that he suffered severe injuries during the June 14 melee, including a severed tendon in his right hand. Julien is seeking actual and punitive damages.

He is also suing the operators of the club Greenhouse and its basement lounge, W.i.P. The lawsuit was filed in New York Supreme Court.

Representatives for the nightclub, Brown and Drake had no immediate comment.

No criminal charges have been filed in the fight. Brown, NBA star Tony Parker and others were also injured. Police say the fracas started after members of Drake's entourage confronted Brown on the dance floor.
