Mayor William ?Bill? Bohlke of Hollywood Park, Texas (circled) was apparently killed by his 500-pound donkey Monday, said Chief Deputy David Soward of the Atascosa County Sheriff?s Office. Soward said the donkey remains on the ranch and an exact determination of the cause of death is pending.

The prime suspect in the death a Texas mayor is an angry donkey. William Bohlke, mayor of Hollywood Park, was found dead on his ranch Monday night, the San Antonio Express-News reported.

Hours earlier, Atascosa County Chief Deputy David Soward said, he was kicked and trampled by the 500-pound male donkey.

It wasn?t known what set the animal off, but Soward explained that males ?can become very aggressive, very mean, sometimes triggered by a female in heat.?

Flags at Hollywood Park City Hall were flown at half-mast Tuesday in honor of the 65-year-old mayor.

In a statement on the city?s website, Bohlke?s family said he ?dearly loved serving you, our community, and we only wish he was here to continue doing so.?

The City Council will meet Sept. 8 to discuss a replacement mayor.

The fate of the donkey, which remains on the ranch, has not yet been determined, according to Soward.
