"(Mansur Ali Khan) Pataudi had a damaged eye but nobody stopped him from leading the Indian cricket team. And he led with distinction," said Baljit, referring to the India captain from 1962-1970 and 1974-75.
"I read (former England soccer goalkeeper) Gordon Banks continued playing after losing vision in his right eye. So why can't I?"

Myriad can patent breast cancer genes: US court (AFP)
WASHINGTON (AFP) ? A US federal appeals court on Friday ruled in a landmark case that a Utah-based company is allowed to keep its patent on two genes linked to an inherited form of breast cancer.
The ruling overturns a lower court's decision and allows Myriad Genetics to maintain its patent on the isolated genes, known as BRCA1 and BRCA2, despite complaints from rights groups who say it creates an unfair monopoly and limits women's health choices.
The US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit decided such patents on isolated DNA molecules could be held, in accordance with the "longstanding practice" of the Patent and Trademark Office (PTO), over the past 29 years.
The 2-1 court ruling also said the company cannot patent five broadly framed processes of comparing or analyzing DNA sequences because they were "abstract mental processes."
However, a Myriad spokeswoman said that aspect of the ruling did not hurt the company's ability to test for the isolated genes.
"Our intellectual property position today is no different than before the ACLU even brought this case," Rebecca Chambers, head of investor relations with Myriad, told AFP.
She said the company still has 232 method claims, or steps that explain exactly how to test, "as part of 23 patents which describe how we go about doing the BRAC analysis test that were not even part of this lawsuit."
Backed by pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly, Myriad obtained US patents in the mid-1990s on two genes -- BRCA1 and BRCA2 -- strongly associated with hereditary forms of breast and ovarian cancer in women.
According to the National Cancer Institute, 12 percent of women in the general population will develop breast cancer in their lifetimes, compared to 60 percent of women who have inherited a mutation in BRCA1 or BRCA2.
With ovarian cancer, 1.4 percent of women may be diagnosed in their lifetimes but the number rises to 15-40 percent of women with the BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation.
The patents held by Myriad mean the company owns the "exclusive right to perform diagnostic tests on the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes and to prevent any researcher from even looking at the genes without first getting permission from Myriad," the American Civil Liberties Union said in a statement.
A key complaint in the lawsuit, was filed in 2009 by a coalition of patient advocacy and medical groups represented by the ACLU, was that the company wielded too much control over the tests and costs.
The plaintiffs had argued that the company was claiming an "illegal monopoly over products of nature, laws of nature and/or natural phenomena, and abstract ideas or basic human knowledge or thought," the ACLU said in a statement.
ACLU lawyer Sandra Park told AFP: "Myriad's monopoly on the BRCA genes makes it impossible for women to access alternate tests or get a comprehensive second opinion about their results. It also allows Myriad to charge a high price for its tests."
The ACLU was consulting with its clients and would make a decision soon about whether to appeal to the full 12-member court of appeals for the federal circuit or to bring the matter before the Supreme Court, she said.
Analyst Robert Cook-Deegan of the Institute for Genome Sciences and Policy at Duke University in North Carolina, said he expected the legal battle would continue over whether human DNA is something that can be patented and owned.
"This is probably not the last stage in this game," he said. "The fact that all three judges have given very different lines of reasoning does suggest to me that there is going to be another round to go here."
If the matter reaches the Supreme Court, he said the outcome would be "very unpredictable."
Biotech companies first began patenting genes and genetic material in the 1980s. More than 20 percent of the 24,000 human gene patents granted since then have been in the United States.

What happens is, these set off very strong denial mechanisms. By adding all this pink, by asking women to think about gender, you?re triggering that. You?re raising the idea that this is a female thing. It?s pink; it?s for you. You could die. The cues themselves aren?t threatening?it?s just a color! But it connects who you are to the threats.

Despite Broad's all-round contribution, Kevin Pietersen was named man-of-the-match for his first innings 202 not out that laid the platform for England's victory.
Pietersen's innings began in overcast, seam-bowler friendly conditions although India were handicapped by the loss for much of this match of left-arm quick Zaheer Khan, who broke down with a hamstring strain.
"That was one of the great innings I've seen since being involved with the England side, in very difficult circumstances," Strauss said of Pietersen's double century.
"He had to be smart in the way be played their seamers, he had to graft and then when we had the opportunity to attack, he attacked."

A spiral galaxy's starlight and delicate pattern of dust evoke a bright, swirling spider web in space in a newly released image from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope.
Captured in infrared light, the galaxy IC 342's faint starlight gives way to the brightly glowing dust found throughout the galaxy's disk. The spider web-like galaxy is located about 10 million light-years away ? relatively close in the cosmic scheme of things ? but from this vantage point, the galaxy is directly behind the disk of our own Milky Way.
The intervening dust makes it difficult to see IC 342 in visible light, researchers said, but Spitzer's sensitive infrared eyes are able to penetrate this dusty veil. [See the striking photo of galaxy IC 342]
The spiral galaxy appears nearly face-on, which gives a clear view of the structure of its disk. IC 342 has a low surface brightness compared to other spiral galaxies, indicating a lower density of stars, which appear as a blue haze in the image.
The blue and white dots sprinkled throughout the wispy spirals are stars much closer to us, within our own Milky Way.
New stars are forming within IC 342's disk. In fact, the center of the galaxy is actually home to an enormous burst of star formation. To either side of the center, a small bar of dust and gas is helping to fuel the new stars, researchers said.

Obama pushes for '11th-hour' debt deal (AFP)
WASHINGTON (AFP) ? US President Barack Obama has urged polarized lawmakers to find an "11th-hour" deal to avert a calamitous August debt default, but said he saw progress as he praised a new bipartisan plan.
The US leader warned on Tuesday that time was running out to forge a broad deficit-cutting compromise amid dragging talks with Democratic and Republican leaders of the Senate and House of Representatives on raising the US debt ceiling.
"The problem we have now is, we're in the 11th hour, and we don't have a lot more time left," he said in a hastily arranged White House appearance.
Washington hit its $14.3-trillion debt ceiling on May 16 and has used spending and accounting adjustments, as well as higher-than-expected tax receipts, to continue operating normally, but can only do so until August 2.
Finance and business leaders have warned failure to raise the US debt ceiling by then could send shock waves through a world economy still reeling from the 2008 collapse, while Obama has predicted economic "Armageddon."
Very public differences remain as, in a largely symbolic move, the House voted 234-190 late Tuesday to approve a contentious Republican plan -- backed by allies of the archconservative "Tea Party" movement -- to require drastic spending cuts in return for raising the debt limit.
It also ties any increase in the debt ceiling to securing the two-thirds majorities needed in each chamber to send an amendment to the US Constitution requiring a balanced federal budget to the states for ratification.
Obama noted that the so-called "Cut, Cap, and Balance" plan was dead on arrival in the Democratic-held Senate and that he would veto it, making it a political gesture to appeal to conservatives.
Instead Obama highlighted a new plan by a bipartisan "Gang of Six" senators that aims to slash the swollen US budget deficit by some $3.7 trillion over 10 years and boost revenues $1 trillion by closing tax loopholes and ending some tax breaks.
The president called the framework "broadly consistent" with his call to cut spending including on the US military, overhaul cherished social safety net programs, and raise taxes on the rich to ensure "shared sacrifice."
Obama had said he would call top congressional leaders after the House vote to set up a new round of negotiations, but there was no confirmation from the White House late Tuesday or congressional sources of any planned new talks.
The president however expressed hope for a breakthrough "in these next couple of days."
"We don't have any more time to engage in symbolic gestures, we don't have any more time to posture; it's time to get down to the business of actually solving this problem," he warned.
And Obama hedged heavily against the notion that the "Gang of Six" proposal, which faced high congressional hurdles, offered a clear and easy path through angry partisan politics to reach a deal.
"Just because we might agree in principle with a range of issues with six senators, or seven senators, that doesn't get us out of the House of Representatives, that doesn't get us out of the Senate," he said.
"There's going to have to be a broader agreement on the part of all the leadership that we're going to get this done in a serious way."
US stocks closed sharply higher with a boost from Obama's announcement. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1.6 percent helped by strong company results but also nudged by signs a debt deal might be near.
Stocks mostly rose in Asia on Wednesday as well, with Tokyo closing 1.17 percent higher, Seoul rising by a similar rate, and Sydney ending the day up 1.83 percent.
European markets also climbed at the start of trade Wednesday.
A new Washington Post-ABC poll showed meanwhile that most Americans view the Republicans as being particularly intransigent in their stand on the talks, although they also blame Obama for not being willing to compromise.
Some 58 percent of Republicans said their leaders were not doing enough to reach a deal, and a majority favored some of Obama's changes including higher taxes for the wealthiest.
Earlier before the House vote, Republican House Speaker John Boehner said he was working on a "Plan B" to avert default.
"I do think it's responsible for us to look at what Plan B would look like," Boehner said, citing "a lot of options available" but stressing "no decision" had been made.

UK PM: Parliament should delay break over hacking (AP)
LONDON ? British Prime Minister David Cameron, under huge political pressure over the intensifying phone hacking scandal at Rupert Murdoch's embattled U.K. newspaper empire, said Monday that Parliament should delay its summer break so he can brief lawmakers.
Parliament is due to break up for the summer on Tuesday, but Cameron said that "it may well be right to have Parliament meet on Wednesday so I can make a further statement."
Cameron was speaking in South Africa, on the first day of a two-day visit to the continent. He had planned a longer trip, but cut it short as his government faces increasing questions about its relationship with the Murdoch media empire amid a scandal that has tainted some of Britain's top political, media and police figures.
London police chief Paul Stephenson resigned Sunday over his ties to a former News of the World executive editor who has been arrested over the scandal. In his resignation speech Stephenson made pointed reference to Cameron's hiring of Andy Coulson, a former editor of the shuttered tabloid who was arrested earlier this month over hacking.
Murdoch's former British CEO ? and Cameron's friend ? Rebekah Brooks, was arrested Sunday on suspicion of hacking.
Cameron said his government had "taken very decisive action" by setting up a judge-led inquiry into wrongdoing by the newspaper.
Both Stephenson's resignation and Brooks' arrest are ominous not only for Murdoch's News Corp., but for a British power structure that nurtured a cozy relationship with his papers for years.
The arrest on Sunday of the 43-year-old Brooks, often described as a surrogate daughter to the 80-year-old Murdoch, brought the British police investigations into the media baron's inner circle for the first time. She was released on bail some 12 hours later, Scotland Yard announced early Monday.
Brooks, the ultimate social and political insider, dined at Christmas with Cameron. His Conservative-led government is now facing increasing questions about its relationship with Murdoch's media empire.
Rupert and James Murdoch are to be grilled by British lawmakers Tuesday over the scandal. Brooks also had agreed to be questioned before a parliamentary committee, but her arrest throws that appearance into doubt.
Stephenson said he did not make the decision to hire Wallis and had no knowledge of allegations that he was linked to phone hacking, but he wanted his police force to focus on preparing for the 2012 London Olympics instead of wondering about a possible leadership change.
"I had no knowledge of the extent of this disgraceful practice and the repugnant nature of the selection of victims that is now emerging," Stephenson said. "I will not lose any sleep over my personal integrity."
Cameron's office says he is back in Britain on Wednesday. He will visit South Africa and Nigeria. He had also planned to visit Rwanda and Sudan but a decision was made last week to drop that part of the itinerary.

Halliburton 2Q earns grow 54 percent (AP)
NEW YORK ? The expansion of oil and natural gas drilling in North America continued to drive Halliburton Co. as its earnings jumped by nearly 54 percent in the second quarter. Revenue also hit a company record for the period.
The Houston oil services company on Monday kicked off earnings season for the industry with reported earnings of $739 million, or 80 cents per share, for the three months ended June 30. That compares with $480 million, or 53 cents per share, for the same part of 2010. Revenue increased 35.2 percent to $5.94 billion.
Excluding employee-separation costs, quarterly earnings were 81 cents per share.
The results beat Wall Street earnings expectations of 73 cents per share on revenue of $5.64 billion, according to FactSet.
The oil industry has benefited greatly this year as crude prices hit three-year highs. Companies aggressively scoured the planet for new sources of crude, which averaged $102.34 per barrel in the second quarter. One region that received intense interest is North America, which holds vast underground rock formations that are rich in oil and gas.
Halliburton specializes in tapping those formations, and the surge in activity has boosted its financial results so far this year. Halliburton said that revenue grew 16 percent in North America and 8 percent internationally in the second quarter on a sequential basis.
CEO Dave Lesar said petroleum companies have focused much of their efforts on developing fields in the United States, but he sees "increasing interest" in similar underground fields in Europe.
Lesar said that growing energy demand around the world will continue to drive Halliburton's business.
The company said completion and production revenue increased 14 percent to $3.6 billion from the first quarter while its drilling and evaluation business rose 10 percent to $2.3 billion.
Shares increased 90 cents to $53.98 in premarket trading.

Clarke eyes British Open glory as final round begins (AFP)
SANDWICH, England (AFP) ? The prospect of an emotional climax to the British Open was on the cards Sunday as Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke took a one-shot lead into the final round of the tournament.
The 42-year-old Ulsterman, one of the most popular figures in British golf, edged clear of the field on Saturday after carding a 69 over the Royal St George's links to move to five under par in a storm-hit third round.
Clarke, who has never won a Major, now faces a battle of nerves over the final 18 holes where his closest challenger is Dustin Johnson, the American who suffered agonising near misses at the US Open and PGA Championship last year.
Clarke and Johnson were the final pairing in Sunday's field, due to tee off at 1410 local time (1310 GMT).
Two strokes further back are young American Rickie Fowler, who shot a brilliant two-under-par 68 on Saturday and Denmark's Thomas Bjorn.
On one under were Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez (72) and Lucas Glover of the United States (73).
But US Open champion Rory McIlroy, the tournament favourite from Northern Ireland, has faded from contention after a 74 on Saturday which left him nine shots off the lead.
Instead it has been left to Clarke to carry the Northern Irish challenge into the final round which got under way Sunday with more heavy rain and wind forecast to lash the course during the day.
Many thought that Clarke had left his best chance of winning The Open at Royal Troon in 1997 where he just missed out to Justin Leonard.
A further near-miss came at Royal Lytham four years later. His recent record at the Open has been absymal, with two missed cuts and a tie for 44th at St Andrews in last year's tournament.
But working with renowned sports psychologist Bob Rotella has helped put Clarke back in the frame once more.
"The Open is the biggest and best tournament in the world," Clarke said on Saturday. "I've failed 19 times to lift the Claret Jug, and tomorrow I have an opportunity, but at the moment it's just an opportunity."
Meanwhile Johnson, who has been feeling under the weather all week, said that the experience he gained in the Majors last year would prove to be invaluable.
"Obviously I've been in this situation a few times, so I think the more and more you can put yourself in a situation, the more comfortable you get," he said.
