Gateway One ZX4970G-UW308

For users looking to save both money and space, few choices are as attractive and well-rounded as the Gateway One ZX4970G-UW308 ($598 list), a Windows 8-equipped all-in-one desktop. Although its sub-$600 entails a few necessary compromises, the One ZX4970G-UW308 nicely acquits itself of these shortcomings by packing some nifty tricks up its sleeve, including a full HD display, a spacious 1TB HDD, HDMI-input, and USB 3.0 connectivity. For average users on the hunt for an affordably-priced system capable of performing basic daily tasks as well as the occasional media project, it's the entry-level all-in-one desktop to beat, and our newest Editors' Choice.

Design and Features
The One ZX4970G-UW308's plastic chassis measures 16.3 by 20.9 by 2.28 inches (HWD) and although that'srelatively bulky by all-in-one standards, it nonetheless uses significantly less desk space than a traditional tower PC by housing all of its components behind a 21.5-inch display. While it's not the sleekest all-in-one on the market, the One ZX4970G-UW308 is attractive and functionally designed . A silver U-shaped support bar beneath the display nicely complements its all-black chassis, resulting in a two-tone finish that adds a healthy dash of panache in a price point dominated by a more subdued, utilitarian aesthetic, like the design of the Acer Veriton VZ2650G-UG645X and the Lenovo C325. A leg in the rear of the chassis allows users to adjust the screen angle from a vertical 90 degrees to 20 degrees back.

The One ZX4970G-UW308's 21.5-inch display has a full HD resolution of 1,920 by 1,080, an impressive feature that gives it a distinct advantage over the 1,600-by-900 resolution found in its peers, like the HP Pavilion 20-b010z. Consequently, colors and text alike look crisp and vibrant. The One ZX4970G-UW308's full HD resolution display is all the more useful because it sports a DVD burner as well an HDMI-in port that can accommodate Blu-ray players, HD cable boxes, and game consoles.

Given its price, it's not surprising that the One ZX4970G-UW308 doesn't have a touch screen, a feature that typically adds a premium to a system's sticker price. For instance, our former Editors' Choice for entry-level desktops, the HP TouchSmart 320-1030, sports a touch display and costs $150 more than the One ZX4970. The two 2.5-watt front-firing speakers beneath the One ZX4970G-UW308's display are surprisingly capable of pumping out sound at volumes loud enough for a few folks to hear music and dialogue in a small room.

With the exception of its HDMI-input, the One ZX4970G-UW308's port selection is roughly on par with the rest of its class. The left side of the system houses a pair of USB 3.0 ports, a multicard reader (MD/SD/MMC), and headphone and microphone jacks. The rear has four USB 2.0 ports, HDMI input, and a full-sized Ethernet port. Users need not remain tethered to their routers, though, since the One ZX4970G-UW308 also features integrated 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi. The included wireless mouse and keyboard share the same dongle.

The One ZX4970G-UW308 comes with a roomy 1TB, 7,200rpm HDD. Still, users with a preference for starting with a clean slate will confront a significant amount of preloaded software to cut through. These programs vary from useful (Microsoft Office Starter 2010, CyberLink Power DVD 10, Nero 12 Essentials) to flat-out bloatware (links to eBay, Skype, Amazon, Hulu, Skype), with some trialware (60 days of Norton Internet Security) and proprietary software (Gateway Power Management, Gateway Recovery Management) sprinkled in the middle. Gateway covers the One ZX4970G-UW308 with a one-year warranty on parts and labor.

Performance
Gateway ZX4970G-UW308 Although the One ZX4970G-UW308's 2.9GHz Intel Pentium G645 yields modest processing power, its 6GB RAM bolstered its performance on our benchmarks tests past most of its rivals.). The One ZX4970G-UW308's PCMark7 score of 3,008 points bested the rest of the pack by a sizeable margin, with the Acer VZ2650G-UG645X finishing in a distant second-place (2,232 points). Similar results were seen in its CineBench R11.5 score of 2.24 points, with the One ZX4970G-UW308easily outmaneuvering the Acer VZ2650G-UG645X (2.18 points) and, to a more pronounced extent, the HP 320-1030 (1.51 points).

Gateway ZX4970G-UW308

In completing our Handbrake video-encoding test in 2 minutes 16 seconds and taking 6:08 on our Photoshop CS6 test, the One ZX4970G-UW308 proved itself capable of tackling the occasional casual photo- or video-editing project. Like the Acer VZ2650G-UG645X, it couldn't run any of our DirectX11 graphics tests (3DMark11, Aliens Vs. Predator) and its inability to cross 10fps in our Heaven benchmark tests (8fps with medium-quality settings in 1,366-by-768 resolution; 3fps with very high-quality settings in 1,920-by-1,080 resolution) make it clear that this is not a system designed for high-end gaming.

The Gateway One ZX4970G-UW308 ($598 list) is an affordable and well-rounded all-in-one desktop. While there are a few shortcomings that are entirely consistent with its price range and category, they're made all the more forgivable by virtue of a solid feature set that includes a full HD display, a 1TB HDD, and an HDMI-input. In an arena where value towers above other all else, few systems has as much to offer for so little. For these reasons, the One ZX4970G-UW308 takes over from the HP TouchSmart 320-1030 as our Editors' Choice for entry-level all-in-ones. The Gateway One ZX4970G-UW308 is an excellent value for users looking to save on space and money.

The right high-performance cross-country skiwear

Mar. 1, 2013 ? The sport of cross-country skiing has always been preoccupied with its skis and waxing. Research now demonstrates that to shave off those extra hundredths of a second, competitive skiers should pay more attention to their clothing.

Research at SINTEF shows that what you wear is closely linked to performance. If skiers wearing modern competition skiwear want to achieve peak performance, the temperature around their bodies should be between +1 and -4 degrees. Colder or warmer than this and the time taken before they become exhausted is reduced, and performance suffers.

"The reason for this is that our average skin temperature rises and falls in step with our surroundings," says health researcher Mariann Sandsund at SINTEF Technology and Society. "If our skin temperature is too low, our muscle temperature falls, our joints and ligaments stiffen, and enzyme activity in our cells is changed," she says. "At the other extreme, high skin temperatures mean that sweat production increases.

This leads to greater fluid loss and dehydration which in turn have a negative impact on our performance." This is why it is important to wear clothing which can minimise these changes in our bodies," says Sandsund, who also heads the project "Idrett i kaldt klima" (Sport in cold climates).

Always the same ski suit

Research investigations kicked-off as early as in 2009 when several skiers from the Norwegian national team and skiing students from Heimdal and Mer?ker upper secondary schools were interviewed about their views on the skiwear they used during training and competition. They said that normally they always wore their ski suits, but that they would vary the layers they wore under their suits depending on the temperature.

Based on the feedback from the skiers as to what they felt functioned well and less well, researchers carried out a field study in Trondheim involving another group of eight highly-trained skiers in order to study core and skin temperatures under simulated competition conditions. They found that especially the hands, chest and thighs were subject to over-cooling.

Cold lab

The next step was to carry out a larger study at SINTEF's Work Physiology lab involving participants from the cross-country skiers group at NTNUI. These were highly-trained young people well used to stretching themselves in training and competition.

They were set the task of running on a treadmill until they were completely exhausted. The studies took place under six different temperature conditions varying from -14 to +20 degrees, and in winds of 5 metres per second. Sensors and thermometers were attached to the bodies of the participants.

"We succeeded in finding the peak performance temperature window," says Sandsund. "No-one had managed to demonstrate the relation between peak performance and temperature for cross-country skiers before," she says. "When we started our investigations we had no idea where the peak performance temperature window would be for modern ski suits," says Sandsund.

Less efficient in the cold

It was one thing for the researchers to determine the peak performance temperature window derived from measurements of how long it took a skier to become exhausted. The next was to study the impact on physiological mechanisms. They looked into how different temperatures impacted on maximum oxygen uptake, lactic acid thresholds, and what it cost the skier in terms of work economy to complete the exercise.

"Here we observed that the test individuals achieved maximum oxygen uptake regardless of temperature, but they couldn't maintain uptake over time under extreme temperature conditions. We saw that when it becomes cold it costs the body more to perform work -- it simply functions less efficiently," says researcher ?ystein Wiggen, who has been working on the same project.

Major source of knowledge building

Work involved with "Sport in Cold Climates" is incorporated as part of the so-called "ColdWear" project in which clothing, temperature conditions and peak performance capabilities have been common denominators in all aspects linked to petroleum industry- and sports-related studies.

?ystein Wiggen has continued his studies into sports and their relation to cold as part of his doctorate thesis, and has been looking into performance linked to double-poling techniques and upper body work in the cold chamber at the Work Physiology Laboratory. He has carried this out using both endurance tests lasting up to 20 minutes and short sprints varying from 30 seconds to 2 minutes.

"We have always wanted to make the tests more realistic, and we know of course that modern cross-country skiing is very dependent on upper body work," says Wiggen, who has run trials with test individuals in temperatures varying from +5 to -15 degrees. The results showed that performance declined by between 2 and 3 per cent in cold conditions.

In addition to Wiggen's doctorate studies, four Masters' students from NTNU have been working in this field and have made contributions to this research project. This means that the project has accumulated a significant amount of knowledge and expertise.

Swix updated

Throughout the project, Swix Sport AS has been informed of the results obtained, and has had access to a large volume of data. In 2011 the company introduced a new World Championship suit for cross-country skiers. The development of the suit was based on research generated by SINTEF.

Mariann Sandsund and ?ystein Wiggen both emphasise that the project has demonstrated that modern clothing is optimal in temperatures just under 0?C, but is far from ideal under all temperature conditions.

Norwegian skiing star Petter Northug has himself said that he can't race wearing too many layers. "Perhaps we should now simply be thinking in terms of the benefits of selecting our skiwear according to the conditions," says Wiggen.

Los Angeles asks Supreme Court to overturn ban on Skid Row seizures

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Los Angeles asked the U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday to allow police and city workers to seize or destroy property that homeless people leave unattended on sidewalks, saying Skid Row homeless encampments presented a public-health risk.

The greater Los Angeles area has one of the nation's largest populations of homeless people, and the city's legal fight is seen as having implications for how other municipalities deal with transients.

The city had removed or destroyed property left unattended on sidewalks during cleaning drives, but eight homeless Skid Row residents sued in 2011 to stop the practice.

The U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals last year upheld a lower court ruling that found the city may not take homeless people's property under provisions of the U.S. Constitution that protect against unreasonable search and seizure and uphold the right to due process before being deprived of property.

Papers filed with the U.S. Supreme Court by attorneys for Los Angeles cited a recent tuberculosis outbreak in downtown Los Angeles in their request to overturn the appeals court ruling.

"We have an obligation to the homeless, as well as to the other residents and businesses on Skid Row, to ensure their health through regularly cleaning Skid Row's streets and sidewalks," City Attorney Carmen Trutanich said in a statement.

"The current outbreak of tuberculosis among that most vulnerable population should serve as a stern reminder to us all of just who and what is at risk in this matter," he said.

Some 4,500 people on Skid Row are believed to have been exposed to tuberculosis in the latest outbreak, the city's petition said.

Downtown Los Angeles, which in recent years has seen old high-rise buildings refurbished into upscale apartments and condos, has large numbers of homeless residents who regularly pitch tents on certain alleys and on sidewalks.

The homeless Skid Row residents who sued the city contended that police and city workers took or destroyed their medication, family memorabilia, electronic devices, birth certificates and other cherished items.

The city's petition said the 9th Circuit decision had reached far beyond Los Angeles and strengthened the legal position of transients suing cities for similar reasons.

An attorney who represented the homeless plaintiffs did not return calls seeking comment.

Homeless encampments in Los Angeles remain a day-to-day concern for city officials, and the city's petition came on the same day two Los Angeles police officers rescued a sleeping homeless woman from a burning tent on Skid Row, police said.

A 2011 survey found Los Angeles County had 51,000 homeless people on any given night.

(AP) ? Lindsay Lohan is committed to turning her life around and wants to record public service announcements on the dangers of domestic violence, alcohol abuse and drunken driving, her attorney said Wednesday.

Mark Heller told The Associated Press that the actress' plans are independent of a criminal case that could return her to jail on charges that she lied to police about being a passenger in her car when it slammed into a dump truck in June.

The "Liz & Dick" star has been repeatedly sentenced to jail, rehab, and community service since her first pair of arrests for driving under the influence in 2007. She spent several months in court-ordered psychotherapy until a judge released her from supervised probation in March 2012.

As part of the intense psychotherapy sessions, Lohan is in the beginning stages of trying to become an inspirational speaker to young people, he said.

"I think she suddenly woke up one morning and had an epiphany and she suddenly realized and appreciated the seriousness of the events that led to her being in court," Heller said.

"She's going to try to inspire hope in people," he said. "I think it will be good for her. It certainly won't hurt others."

Heller mentioned Lohan's intent to become an inspirational speaker in a letter to prosecutors and a judge that was obtained Tuesday. He said he will meet with prosecutors on Friday to try to reach a resolution in Lohan's newest case, which includes misdemeanor charges of reckless driving and obstructing officers from performing their duties.

She has pleaded not guilty. Lohan, 26, was on probation at the time of the crash and faces up to 245 days in jail if a judge determines her conduct violated her probation in a 2011 necklace theft case.

Officers suspected alcohol might have been involved in the June accident on Pacific Coast Highway, but the actress passed sobriety tests at a hospital and she was never charged with driving under the influence.

Santa Monica police Sgt. Richard Lewis said officers did not give Lohan a field sobriety test at the accident scene because she and her assistant were injured in the crash and were taken to a nearby hospital. While officers could not rule out that Lohan might have been drinking, he noted that she did not show signs of impairment.

Celebrity web site TMZ, citing anonymous sources, reported Wednesday that a bottle of alcohol was found next to Lohan's sports car after the crash. Lewis said he could not discuss evidence in the case, but noted that the actress was not charged with drunken driving.

Heller wrote in a motion filed last week that officers found a bottle that they initially thought was urine, but might have contained wine. His filing, which seeks a delay or dismissal of charges against the actress, states that "upon information and belief" the bottle's contents were never tested.

Lohan's case returns to court on Friday, although the actress is not required to attend.

Heller is asking a judge to dismiss the case against Lohan because officers ignored the actress' request to talk to her attorney before being interviewed, court records show. He said he is prepared to defend Lohan at trial if necessary, but is hoping a deal can be worked out. He is seeking a delay in the case to have time to prepare and allow Lohan to demonstrate she is improving her life.

Threats from judges and jail sentences that are invariably cut short because of overcrowding haven't helped Lohan, Heller said. "None of it really brought closure to this predicament that led to this most recent event."
