Oklahoma native Woodie Guthrie would have been 100 years old this year. On the eve of his birthday, the George Kaiser Family Foundation announced the name of its new park in the Brady Arts District, Guthrie Green. The folk music icon was a favorite among Tulsa home owners, who are celebrating his life and excited about their new community park.
Now, Tulsa home owned can enjoy a spacious public park near Brady and Cameron Streets and Boston and Cincinnati avenues. The park will play host to special events, activities, and of course, music. A variety of local, regional, and national acts will display their talent in Guthrie Green in an homage of sorts to the park?s namesake.
Adds Stanton Doyle, George Kaiser Family Foundation program officer, ?After the community input process, Woody Guthrie emerged as a strong theme and it was important to George Kaiser Family Foundation that the park reflected the culture and sentiment of the area.? The foundation purchased the Woody Guthrie?s Archive, which will be featured on display in the Woody Guthrie Center directly across from the park. Guthrie?s archives include nearly 3,000 song lyrics, original musical recordings, over 700 pieces of artwork, letters and postcards, and a variety of books about the folk music legend. His manuscripts and personal journals will also be part of the collection.
Guthrie Green will host its grand opening celebration in September 2012. Tulsa home owners can expect a day filled with activities, fun, and of course, music.
